Peeing at night

I'm 53 and on HRT. The last few months or so I have been waking 5 times a night for a pee and I have a full bladder each time. It's not painful and doesn't feel like a UTI. I'm now worried there's a problem with my kidneys. Going to do an eConsult and see the doctor but I wonder if anyone else has had this and it be an easy fix?

My BMI is 25 and I'm working on that - doing an exercise video that I enjoy 4-5 times a week plus my diet has improved and I hardly drink alcohol and I don't smoke. I have two coffees in the morning and then sip water throughout the day. I don't feel unwell or anything. Also should probably say I suffer from stress incontinence which started about 18 months ago.

Do you have any other symptoms ? Bloating, feeling full quickly etc? Lots of weeing can be indicative of problems with the reproductive organs (both benign and malignant) so definitely worth checking out. 5 times is a lot!

Try not eating anything sweet in the evening and not having a drink after dinner.probably still worth a chat with a doctor

I eat dinner early with my son at 6pm then nothing at all until breakfast. I do get bloating occasionally. Hmm, I am a bit worried.

I would ask for an appointment with your GP as weeing often at night can also be a symptom of diabetes

Tbh you may have a uti without any other symptoms. Frequency is one of the common problems even without any pain.

So I would just drop a sample off at the GPs (or your pharmacy as they do the pharmacy first thing now which I don't agree with but that's another story lol) but it is a quick way of ruling out any bacterial growth.

Always rule out a uti which are so common in the over 50s before worrying about anything else.

If this was small amounts of urine, it would probably be loss of estrogen causing your bladder lining to thin and need to empty more often. And the treatment is using vaginal estrogen cream alongside your HRT. This could also help your stress incontinence - are you getting help for that such as from a women's physo?

But if you really are weeing a LOT then you need some tests.
As PPs have said it could be diabetes, or a kidney issue.
If you have bloating you should also ask for an ultrasound scan of your ovaries.

You also need to drink enough during the day. If you wee is concentrated, it can be irritating. Are you drinking at least 1.5 litres a day?
Doesn't sound like it if you just sip water most of the day.

I have not got help for the stress incontinence until now but I have asked about this in the econsult I did this morning.

I think I drink enough water each day but it is off putting to drink anything in the evening because of the nighttime antics!

I shall see what the doctors come back with. I'm in the system now.

It's important to drink because if your urine is concentrated it can irritate your bladder. Not drinking after 6pm won't be good for your kidneys and restricting fluid is usually counter productive.

Depending on how soon you get help from your GP, you could buy a blood sugar monitor- either a fancy one that tracks your BG on your phone or the finger prick blood test kits. You really need a blood test but if you have to wait for weeks....

Are you very thirst? Diabetes usually shows itself up as thirst as well.

Your GP could ask you to collect your urine output to measure how much over 24 hours and when (so be prepared.)

Hi all. Just an update - I saw the GP this morning.

No infection present in urine. She did an internal examination to check for a prolapse - all ok there. She's referred me for blood tests to check for diabetes and she's also prescribed me some Ovestin cream as she thinks this will help.

I have to cut out one of my caffeine fixes (all would be better!) be diligent with daily pelvic floor exercises and she wants me to make sure I'm drinking two litres of water per day but bring it forward so I'm mainly drinking in the day. Hopefully all this combined will help ☺️
