ovestin cream

I read about ovestin cream on here for vaginal atrophy and Dr Google suggests this is what I have. I'm 53, haven't had a period in 5 years and I have been rather blase about menopause, no other symptoms until now.

I do suffer from recurring thrush and it has taken a while to realise my current symptoms are different, burning, itching, bleeding etc.

Anyhoo, tried to buy some ovestin cream online but they wouldn't prescribe it, not sure why other than I haven't used it before.

I get bad migraines and years ago I was warned never to take the combined pill, only the mini pill. Does this mean that I really shouldn't consider an Oestrogen cream now?

thank you for any advice!

I thought the estriol 0.1% is 10 times less concentrated than Ovestin which is 1%...... has anyone found a generic which is the same strength as Ovestin?

BonzoGates · 13/05/2024 07:13

Here's my supply - same preparation

There may be a 'lighter' Estriol cream, I think the brand name was Gynest so just watch for the formulation

Ovestin isn't 1% @Localher0 . The amount of cream per application is 1mgs but the amount of estriol in it is 0.1%

Localher0 · 13/05/2024 08:00

@JinglingSpringbells Thanks for that! I wasn't looking forward to wanging 10 times more up my foof every few days 😬. Although the effects could have been interesting!

Localher0 · 13/05/2024 08:39

Oh hang on - my estriol is 0.01%!! Do others on here have 0.1% generic estriol cream??

ovestin cream
BonzoGates · 13/05/2024 08:47

I think the bottom one was formerly known as Gynest and is the weaker preparation

BonzoGates · 13/05/2024 08:48

Ovestin (now oestriol)is 0.1% whereas Gynest (now oestriol) is 0.01%

Wbeezer · 13/05/2024 08:49

I had that type @Localher0 and you applied a much bigger volume compared to a tiny blob of ovestin, came in a bigger tube with a bigger applicator, it was a bit messier but the result was the same dosage of estriol.

Thanks for this clarification - good to know

Edited

It's 1mg per week - the dosage is 0.5mg, twice a week.

iv had a look at the cream as I got it to hand due to only being prescribed it last Friday.
I’m up to my eyes at the moment but if I can I’ll try to post a picture later.

ovestin cream in the purple box like the picture above (not the white box) is now called estriol. It looks like all packaging right down to the typeface has stayed the same except the name.
the ingredients state 1mg of estriol per 1g of cream. 15g tube.

tre is a picture of the old and new box side by side up thread too.

the white tube I can’t help with obviously, but hopefully that clarifies things about the purple box cream.

No GP will want to examine you for this, @ParrotPirouette. It will be a telephone appointment, surely? You state your symptoms, ask for Ovestin (a no brainer given you are post-meno). Once thats agreed ask for it to be put on your repeat prescriptions.

GPs are overwhelmed, they are not looking to call you in for unnecessary internal exams.

Thanks, yes, I have a telephone appointment for the 23rd June.
my order of cream from the online pharmacy was cancelled and refunded. Not sure why they say they can prescribe it online if they just cancel orders. Anyone know why I might be triggering rejections? I included info about the medication I take for high blood pressure, might be that?

Sorry about that. You'd be thinking we were asking for crystal meth 😡

Possibly. The cancellation will be automated by an algorithm. They won't be looking at every order in person. Ovestin isn't HRT and it makes me annoyed when the press report 'HRT to be sold over the counter' when what they meant was Gina which is topical estrogen.

So it's possible that because the leaflet in Ovestin is the same as for systemic HRT, [something consultants have been trying for YEARS to have changed] you have ticked a 'No' box by saying you have high BP.

There are loads of online pharmacies so try another.

Failing that many local private hospital offer private GP appts and if you can afford that, it's another option.
