Mirena coil after five years

Not sure whether I should ask about this in here or family planning or somewhere else..

I'm 46 and have had my mirena coil for almost five years. I love it because I haven't got my periods, previously I was on minipill for many years, also no periods.

This week I asked about getting it replaced but was told it can now be left in place for 8 years unless needed for HRT.

How would you know if you need it for HRT? I'm also dreading now that my period will return unexpectedly and would hate that.

I would think that at my age I would be at least perimenopausal.

From Google search it appears this 8 year licence is a fairly new thing so not much information available on what to expect after five years. I'm currently going through a separation and my marriage has been dead for many many years and therefore the contraceptive effects aren't that important for me. Anyone have any experiences?

Not sure if I'm answering your question but I'm 53 and have had my latest Mirena in for 4 years, due to be removed 2025.

I'm surrounded by menopausal women and they're all on HRT except me. The only symptom I have are hot flushes, these can be annoying but bearable.

I often wonder if the coil is keeping other symptoms at bay so I'd be happy to keep it for 8 years.

If you are using oestrogen gel or patches or tablets as part of hrt you need the progesterone in the mirena to protect the uterus and in this case the licence is only for 5 years as after that they don't think the mirena provides enough progesterone. It could be that you start to have some bleeding as the progesterone runs out in the mirena. If you were to start hrt you would need it replaced.

Agree with PP I had to have my Mirena replaced after 5 years at 53 ( just started meno symptoms) for my HRT- you need the progesterone

Thanks for the responses.

@Whyevencare That's what I am wondering if it is in fact the mirena coil that is keeping my symptoms at bay, not on anything else for menopause and have no symptoms other than the occasional annoying chin hairs. Concerned now that if it's not being replaced for another 3 years that I will start getting menopause symptoms or bleeding.
