Starting the mini pill in peri-menopause.

I've been thinking about the merina coil , and it seems to be a good option for my stage in peri-menopause. But I don't know if I like the idea of it being inserted and being there all the time.

So I was wondering if I should consider the mini pill for my complaints, which in this aspect is spotting between periods and heavy ,painful and clots.

The contraceptive aspect will be beneficial as I'm still rather regular.

Any wisdom?

Hi , I’m on the mini pill , because I had lots of bleeding, I didn’t want the coil as I hated the idea of something in me . I had a lot of spotting the first few months, but it seems to have calmed down now .

I had a week of spotting and then nothing. No bleeding for 2 years now. Worth a try!

I had spotting for around 3 months after starting mini pill and was just about to stop and come back off it when the spotting stopped. Six months later I've had no more spotting since. I'm not sure it has done anything for my peri symptoms except get rid of my constant achy boobs and irregular periods. However with those two under control the rest of my peri symptoms have become a lot more manageable.

I figured since I'm spotting anyway I might as well try to make my periods better ,and it's contraception as well. I'll probably have more luck making an appointment about contraception than I will about menopause.

I haven't discarded the idea of the merina, but I could probably be taking the mini pill long before I get an appointment for that.

I love the mini pill. No periods since 2019 and no hormonal migraines. I do get sore boobs more often than I used to and occasionally I will get phantom ovulation/period pains but they're never anywhere near as bad as cramps I had before. I'm 43 this year and def perimenopausal, minipill is massive help.

I've put in an online request at my surgery and I have a telephone consultation with a nurse in nearly 3 weeks time.

I went on it for a year and a half in order to tackle heavy, irregular periods with large clots. It had no measurable effect. And in fact when I came off it my periods got shorter and lighter.

My worry is that it won't do anything, or even make it worse. Moreso with the coil as I'd have to wait for removal.

Has anyone used the minipill alongside eostrogen hrt, particularly the gels for vaginal atrophy? There seems to be contradictory statements online about whether this is advised.

I'm on the mini pill, and also on oestrogel and utergestan.

What are the issues @Mairzydotes ?

BarrelOfOtters · 23/04/2024 14:24

I went on Qlaira at the start of perimenopause and that helped. But by the end that wasn't cutting it and I was still getting some bleeding but more mood swings with the progesterone. I'm now on the coil and it's been fine. I think these things can change as you move through it.

It's probably worth a go on the mini pill.

It may be from a US site, and the advice the give makes them the most profit?

I thought it would be fine too , as that was the route I was hoping go down.

Yeah , these things have to be tried as short term solutions .

If it's taking this long to get a telephone consultation, I can only imagine how long it will take to get an appointment to fit a coil.
