Night sweats

To the ladies that are having menopausal night sweats do you have very light weight quilts like 2.5 tog or less? Did you find it helps?

I'm not on any HRT yet but have night sweats often so am thinking I may have to get some HRT but don't particularly want my periods to come back. I'm on a progesterone only pill at the moment so don't have periods.

I was considering the combined pill recently for exactly the same thing... And the ruddy crime scenes my erratic periods have turned into. The sweats and itchy skin at night is driving me utterly batshit.

I have 2 summer quilts on the bed. Means I can just sling one off if I'm demented and pull the other over if it's chilly.

So sorry OP posted on wrong thread!! I've reported

greengreyblue · 13/04/2024 19:55

I kept the same duvet and just used to kick it off, windows open year round. It was always worse if I’d had a few glasses of wine.

Thanks for your comments 😊

I've made DH have the summer duvet on since February, however I've also bough a 1.5tog single feather duvet which I'm going to trial this summer.

But the HRT was what stopped the worst of the night sweats. You can have the mirena if you don't want your periods back. Mine has been amazing.

greengreyblue · 14/04/2024 08:22

Not sure how long you had them but mi e lasted about 6 months. I’m 2 years post last period now and they only happen occasionally . No systemic HRT.

JinglingSpringbells · 14/04/2024 09:23

There is no point avoiding hrt and buying quilts etc if you have symptoms that are affecting your sleep badly.

You could suffer from night sweats for decades (my mum has them in her 80s) so having a light period might be the trade off. Once your own periods have stopped anyway, you can use a no-bleed hrt.

pharmachameleon · 14/04/2024 09:25

My only menopausal symptom was the most awful night sweats. I was drenched almost every night and woke up in the middle of the night having to peel wet PJs off me and get changed.
I found if I wore cotton nightwear it was better.
The night sweats stopped the day I started HRT think goodness. You can take HRT with the mini pill so you wouldn't get a period.

AnnaMagnani · 14/04/2024 09:34

I have a lightweight wool duvet. It's good but it's not as good as HRT! Can still wake up soaking if a patch falls off.

If your periods have stopped then you wouldn't have cyclical HRT anyway so no worries about more periods. Or you still have periods you can have the Mirena coil or take with the mini pill so there are lots of options for no periods.

A cool mat under the bottom sheet helps
A lightweight duvet with a blanket I can layer up or remove helps

Thank you for all the tips/advice. I'm going to speak to the doctor as the night sweats have gone on for so long I could do with some relief.

@pharmachameleon can I be rude and ask how old you are? I have been suffering with almost nightly night sweats for a year now... I am 34. Battling with my GP receptionist to get an appointment to allow me to have a blood test. Is that how you knew for sure it was menopause?

Sc51 · 24/12/2024 07:12

I have terrible sweats now but have always had them a bit during my cycle. I wasn't keen to try HRT as this is my only menopause symptom but I was prescribed oxybutynin to try and it's sorted it right out.
It's supposed to be for bladder issues but a side effect is less sweat for some reason. No other effects at all, it's been easy to take.
I had to push a bit for it as they wanted to go straight for HRT. I'll happily have HRT when needed but this is all I need for now. Good luck.

Iizzyb · 24/12/2024 07:17

@MamaLew15 it was for me. At your age if you are perimenopausal you'd be recommended to take hrt to protect your bones. I would definitely get it checked out.

NICE guidelines would give you ammunition if you are struggling to get an appt.

MamaLew15 · 24/12/2024 07:23

That's really helpful! Thank you so much for the reply @pharmachameleon
I am on the combined pill, with regular periods so the last GP dismissed me straight away. But I have quite a few peri symptoms. They just like to put it down to anxiety but, I have dramatically changed my life / lifestyle and the night sweats still remain. Along with the body aches, loss of libido, brain fog 😩
Thank you, hadn't considered NICE guidelines for this as have only ever had to refer to them for getting help with my daughter. I'll take a look :)

pharmachameleon · 24/12/2024 12:56

@MamaLew15 I think I was 40 when my symptoms started. I got a blood test for menopause when I was 43 and my levels were super low indicating I was menopausal. I started HRT that day as I was worried about the damage years of low oestrogen would have on my bones etc.
