Constant bleeding

I’ve been bleeding for a month now. It started with a normal period (always heavy for me due to fibroids) then I had dark black then brown heavy discharge for two weeks and then I had a heavier than normal period and it hasn’t stopped. The period is lighter now, but it’s still going. I’m guessing this is linked to perimenapause because I’m 48. Has anyone else experienced anything similar? And does the bleeding ever stop?

Make an appointment with your doctor ASAP. If you continue to bleed you are going to become anaemic and then ill. And yes, the bleeding will stop.

Good luck.

Yes this happened to me. I bled for 7 weeks.
I went to the GP and they gave me a drug to stop the bleeding and an urgent referral for uterine cancer check up.
That ended up all clear and the gynea said something about my body lacking the hormones required to stop the period. Or something like that.
I was sent away with more of the drug to use if it happened again but it never has.
I am now in full menopause having had no periods for over a year. That happened prob 6 months later (ie i had 6 usual periods before stopping totally) all my periods in peri were much heavier than usual which apparently is also a usual symptom.
So I'd get a GP appointment.

Thanks you @Namechangedasouting987 and @haveacat . I’m awaiting blood tests and a scan. But whilst I’m waiting i thought I’d come on here and see if anyone else had it in perimenapause to stop my mind from thinking the worst !

My Dad is going to sit in next weeks. ‘Meeting’.

Bowels results completely out.

taken 12+ months to get answers it was the bowel causing problems. Not a fibroid.

Thank god for tests.

Tillyminny · 13/04/2024 08:58

@Userxxxxx was this for a constant period at the start?

Similar thing happening here. Missed a period (perimenopause), followed by heavy bleeding with huge clots that did not stop. I was prescribed progesterone after about 3 weeks. It stops the bleeding completely but then re-starts just as heavily when the course finishes. I now take progesterone for 20 days at a time, followed by a short break before restarting again on day 5 of my cycle. Having an ultrasound in a few weeks. Never had a fibroid to my knowledge but it seems to fit all the symptoms.

Had a tonne of blood tests which showed that I'm now anaemic. All the other tests were fine including CA125 and FIT test. GP mentioned getting the coil after the ultrasound. Can't take the progesterone like this forever but it's a great stop gap while waiting for a permanent solution.

It's been a rollercoaster!

@SortOfSort this sounds very similar. When I went to get the referral for the scan and blood tests I asked the doctor if there is anything that could stop the bleeding. She mentioned the coil. She didn’t have my medical records in front of her though as it was an overflow surgery for people who need an appointment and can’t wait weeks. I’ve had the coil before but it made my periods really heavy. That was when I was in my late 20s - early 30s. So if it does that to me now (with fibroids) my bleeding will be horrendous 🙈. Progesterone sounds promising though. My blood test results are due tomorrow. I’ve been buying ferrous sulphate though so hopefully that has helped my iron levels.
