55 and still having periods 😢 Anyone else? Should I be speaking to my GP about it?

I feel your pain @Geminijust ! They’re an absolute pain, aren’t they? I thought I’d finally cracked it when I had a six month gap last year, but no - back they came with all the usual PMT symptoms.

My mum was 60! So I’m not expecting to stop myself anytime soon…

JasmineTea11 · 06/04/2024 16:06

I had a copper coil that caused me to bleed heavily and had to have it removed. The mirena coil works a treat for me though, no periods, late 40s.
How individuals respond to treatments etc is so variable.

SirChenjins · 06/04/2024 19:28

@Beanie567 60???? Oh my goodness 😲

53 here and still bleeding. I’ve just been moved onto continuous evorel patches and my period has lasted 12 days (light). Jingling do you think I should continue with the patches? 6 months you mention above?

Sorry to jump in op - I just want them to end too!

SirChenjins · 07/04/2024 12:03

Jump away! 😊 I’m so pleased this thread is helping others, I was beginning to think I was the only one out there still having periods at a ripe old age!

Stupid question alert - does this mean we could all still have babies, or are the chances of a successful pregnancy low to zilch?

OP posts:
Newgirls · 07/04/2024 12:06

Jeez that’s a scary thought! Can’t imagine it’s recommended

SirChenjins · 07/04/2024 12:13

No, I don’t imagine so - I’m more just curious!

My menopause specialist said that, as I was 57 and still having periods, it was a possibility and to keep using contraception 😮

Focalpoint · 07/04/2024 12:32

Im 52 and went onto progesterone only pill (instead of mirena) last year due to heavy periods. They lightened immediately and then stopped completely after about 6 months. Such a relief. Ive no other menopause symptoms as far as I can tell.

LemonDrizzle72 · 07/04/2024 12:39

I was 45 when my periods stopped, abruptly. No spotting, nothing. Regular as clockwork and then, one month, absolutely nothing. Had a really rough time (now 52) which led to lots of emotional issues - divorce, left my long career...

HRT not offered when I went to see the GP. Thought I was depressed!!

Lots better now but my life has been messed up.

I had no idea that was an option, thanks

Very unlikely. The general advice is up to 54.

I think the oldest ever natural conception and birth in the UK is 56.

Also many cycles towards the end of fertility are without ovulation.

Although the chance of conception may be there (and minute) it's highly unlikely that those pregnancies go to full term.

SabrinaThwaite · 07/04/2024 14:13

That was my thoughts too, but she did say ovulation was still a remote possibility.

SirChenjins · 07/04/2024 18:04

Luckily DH did the sensible thing and had the snip when our third DC appeared somewhat unexpectedly (well, not that unexpectedly I suppose, given what we’d been up to…) but the thought of falling pregnant at this age, even though the odds are massively against it going to term, doesn’t bear thinking about.

I'm 53 and still having monthly bleeds, although I've always got on well with Mirena (had one 1st of all in my early 30s on a medical trial). I had my last one put in 2 years ago and hopefully will get another 5 out of it. Gets rid of the flooding and stops any symptoms. I've not had any signs of meno so far.

Wotrewelookinat · 09/04/2024 07:07

I’m 54 and still having periods about every 25 days. I get really bad period pains these days. I’m on HRT, but feel a mess and drained physically and mentally. So fed up of it. Seeing a menopause specialist in a month, really hoping this helps 🤞.

Are you on cyclical HRT @Wotrewelookinat ?

If you are, having a withdrawal bleed after the end of the progesterone phase is normal - it's not a period.

You'd normally have this bleed on day 30-32 ( if the HRT is a 28 day cycle.)

Is it coming early or is your HRT not controlling your own cycle?

Usually the solution is to tweak your hrt so you don't get regular (natural) periods.

Wotrewelookinat · 09/04/2024 15:34

@JinglingSpringbells I’ve been on cyclical HRT for 3 months now and my bleeding pattern hasn’t changed at all, I’m bleeding about day 9 of the progesterone, so about day 24/25 9f my cycle, so assuming it’s my period breaking through.

@Wotrewelookinat Early bleeding on the progesterone phase with Utrogestan is quite common. This is because Utrogestan isn't so strong as the other types of progestogen and the levels in your body can fall quite easily which means the lining is shed.

You could try taking Utrogestan WITH food even though the leaflet says on an empty stomach.

The reason for this as taking it with food improves its efficacy and you may find you don't bleed early.

You don't have to have a massive meal- just a light snack half an hour or so before you take it at bedtime may work.

Wotrewelookinat · 09/04/2024 16:18

@JinglingSpringbells thank you. I’ll try this next cycle. Am also seeing a menopause specialist early May so hopefully she can tweak my HRT.

ABwithAnItch · 09/04/2024 16:22

I’m 51 and have insisted on being fitted with a Mirena so my periods will stop. I dread every month and am anaemic with the flood, not to mention the pain. My mother did not stop until late 50s, no way am I putting up with this sht for next 6 years.
