If your GP doesn't fit Mirena and sexual health clinic only fits for contraception...

What do you do when you're past an age when you're likely to need it for contraception?
I got mine fitted at 45 and I love it. I'd like another one when this one needs replacing.
Where I live GPs don't do it. You have to go to sexual health clinic. The clinic is only commissioned to fit Mirenas for contraception. So where do post-menopausal women go to get a Mirena? Are they only available on NHS for contraception?

Thanks @Sadik . That is helpful. I was assuming they might not offer contraceptive services to over 50s. 55 is good. That means I'll get my next Mirena fitted at sexual health clinic again. Maybe this crazy situation will have been resolved by the time I need the next one replaced.

If it helps anyone else - I had mine fitted at the local hospital womens health/ Gyn Dept - a quick 3 week wait from GP referral, by an utterly brilliant senior Nurse Practitioner and given local anaesthetic - 5 minutes, in and out.

This will all now get much worse too as if you have a mirena for HRT it needs changing after 5 years.
The licence for use as a contraceptive has now been changed to 8 years so sexual health clinics funded for contraception will only replace every 8 years.

The gynae/meno clinics are already full to bursting and will now be even worse.

WhereAreWeNow · 29/03/2024 17:27

Oh god, I hadn't thought of that @Bubblesdevire . Will the clinic know how long I've had it? Could I lie and say I've had it 8 years or will it be on a central record somewhere?

Found this thread after googling.

Taking HRT and getting sick of the two weekly Utrogestan. Always forget to start it so it’s always late and then it’s hard work to remember to take it every day.contacted family planning but they won’t fit the mirena coil as it’s hormone related instead of contraception. They told me to contact GP.

GP receptionist telling me they don’t fit and go to family planning. I asked her where she suggested I go if both places don’t do it. She said she didn’t know and to complete the online form for a triage to get advice.

I’m grumpy these days anyway because of a lack of hormones but this really doesn’t help. It would seem you’re not a priority once you’re past/on the cusp of passing childbearing age.

My GP will only fit for contraception, not for menopause. You have to go to the sexual health clinic for the latter. I was told it's due to funding because they receive money for contraception.

Ahh see this was a zombie thread - my reply was not relevant.

It’s an absolute scandal. I hope they don’t send me to Gynae for mine. I’ve already been waiting a year for investigations!

BadActingParsley · 15/10/2025 14:09

@purpleflowersfordays the gynae fitted mine. - I was complaining about the about pregesterone part of HRT at the nurse at my GP, she said go to contraception clinic and say it was for contraception - I was sceptical as I was about 53 at the time. They wouldn't do it so GP sent me up to the gynae. I have to go up to the gynae to get it taken out (I fainted when it went in - not pain but pressure on the nerve).

Jamandtoastfortea · 15/10/2025 14:14

I had this when mine needed renewing too. I just said I needed it for contraception (even though I don’t actually have a partner.) and popped to the clinic.

PauliesWalnuts · 15/10/2025 14:19

I had it at 52 in January fitted by nurse practitioner at gynae due to heavy bleeding - would saying that was the reason work?

purpleflowersfordays · 15/10/2025 15:18

It’s crazy to me that we all seem to be battling (and having to lie) just to get what should be a basic procedure carried out.

I’ll see what the GP says but if I’m faced with a long Gynae wait then I think I’ll have no choice but to say it’s for contraception.

i just hope things improve for my daughter by the time she’s my age…it’s a battle I could do without at the moment!
