Mirena coil under GA

superplumb · 27/03/2024 19:30

After trying oral amd vaginally progesterone I've finally agreed to try the mirena. After reading awful stories it really put me off but I cannot stand thr periods anymore and I really feel like hrt would help me
Went to get it under local but it couldn't be fitted because I have a pinpoint cervix ( whatever that means) but he couldn't get it in.
I'm booked into have it under general inApril. I'm getting anxiety again of both the coil and the faff of having a GA.
I'm sure it'll only take 10 mins once I go under but the hospital I need to go to is miles away. I won't be able to drive after so I'll need to get my parents to drive me, MIL to babysit while OH goes to work ( he can't take the day off)
Tell me its worth it please?😪

It's worth it.

Totally progesterone intolerant same as you. Coil went in, bleeding stopped after a month and no period since.

Droolylabradors · 27/03/2024 21:59

Oh and I was absolutely pouring and clotting blood each month so this has changed my life.

EndlesslyDistracted · 27/03/2024 22:03

Mine went in easily enough, best thing ever, from really heavy periods to no periods, no PMS, clearer skin, brilliant. Minimal menopause symptoms so far too (I’m 57 and have had Mirenas for about 15 years now).

canyouletthedogoutplease · 27/03/2024 22:06

Three years into my second Mirena, periods beforehand were just ridiculous, haven't had one since. Worth it for that alone.

MigGirl · 27/03/2024 22:08

How old are you? Are your periods still regular?

I asked to go back on the mini pill as I started having horrendous periods last year, I'm late 40's. My gp was happy with this as my periods where still regular. I was suggested the coil again by my headache nurse, but had issue with a coil fitting once and won't go there again.

BoredAndBroke · 27/03/2024 22:08

Worth it for me. Absolutely life changing.

Vinvertebrate · 27/03/2024 22:09

Had about 4 Mirena, all under GA. Wouldn’t be without one - no periods!!! And the GA is over in what feels like minutes so don’t worry !

I'm 45 but told I can't have the pill past 35. Regular periods but getting shorter in between each cycle

Yes it's worth it. I have mine for about a year and a half now. Periods had become so difficult. Mirena inserted, had some spotting for four months then zilch, no more periods. Fabulous.

I take it that your medical condition meaning you can't have the pill. I'm late 40's and GP said it was fine.

Nothing known. I was on logynon for years. Came off to get pregnant and when I wanted it again at 38 was told they don't recommend the combined pill due to increased risk of stroke and cancer

Older than you and one nurse not keen to give the pill but another gave me cerelle which I’ve taken for a couple of years. No periods and just the occasional light break through bleed.

Pigeonqueen · 03/04/2024 17:00

I would not bank on the coil making your periods stop, sorry. Most people I know who’ve had it fitted had have nothing but non stop bleeding and spotting after having it (even months later) and this is why personally I will never have one. I have issues with clots and heavy periods and I’m on the mini pill (aged 43, been in menopause since 37 due to autoimmune issues) and after about 6-8 weeks my periods completely stopped and haven’t had any since. I’ve been able to take it alongside HRT - oestrogel and utrogestan as well.

BlackSwan · 04/04/2024 15:48

If you need a GA going in, are you likely to need a GA for removal also? Not to be a downer but not everyone gets on with the coil. I’d be keen to understand the exit plan if you’re not satisfied with it for whatever reason. Unless you’re going private I wouldn’t assume you can opt for a GA on demand with timing of your choice.

I had extreme pain when mine was inserted (due to scar tissue) but it slipped out fairly easily.

ImCamembertTheBigCheese · 04/04/2024 15:58

Totally worth it. My periods stopped a few months after I had the coil fitted. I didn't have a period for all the time I had one in. Bliss!

I had mine removed under GA, was a faff to wait for the team to be free to see me (Saturday appointment trying to clear backlogs) but they were quite quick and after a bit of time to make sure I was OK after the GA I was allowed home.

Good luck!

This was my experience.

I had the Mirena fitted two years ago (45) and then had continuous bleeding for nearly four months and had to take the pill for three months to try and reset my system. Up until Christmas I've been on a 28-day cycle with periods lasting around 14 days (longer periods but lighter than pre-Mirena). The Mirena doesn't stop periods for everyone unfortunately!

underpresha · 04/04/2024 23:13

Totally worth it. No bleeding since I got the Mirena, after months of flooding.

MercianQueen · 04/04/2024 23:40

This might be a silly question, but how do you get a Modena fitted or removed under GA? Mine is well overdue replacement and getting a "grin and bear it" appointment so far has taken me months. But I have a tilted cervix, smears are a nightmare and I am dreading the replacement. Even though I know it's worth it - Mirena has been life changing for me.

I wouldn't know how to get it under LA, never mind GA.

I asked my GP, who said no. So I wrote to the governing body (can't recall what it's called now - primary care trust or something?) and they agreed. I did have lots of good reasons. About a week after I sent my letter I got a letter with an appointment to see the gynae consultant (who I had paid to see privately a few months before to get an understanding of the options).

I had a really good GP. I had good reasons for requesting that option and she agreed.

Theredjellybean · 05/04/2024 07:37

I have mine put in under GA , had four...all been brilliant.

borntobequiet · 05/04/2024 08:52

Definitely worth it. I’ve had mine inserted and removed under GA (along with a hysterescopy). The specialist nurse at the surgery was able to refer me.

Katrinawaves · 05/04/2024 08:59

I had my first inserted under GA after 3 failed attempts to do it the normal way - it just popped out each time! I didn’t need it removed under GA and after the first all the replacements went in just fine.

I’m another one who finds them great - my heavy periods stopped completely after a few months. They don’t work for everyone but it’s more common for your periods to lighten or stop (which is why it’s offered as a treatment for this) so it’s definitely worth a go. If it doesn’t work for you (as with any other treatment) you just move on to the next option though as it can take a few months for it to work you will be encouraged to give it a fair trial and not just ask for it to be whipped out after 1 or 2 cycles.

Dulra · 05/04/2024 10:59

I had mine inserted under GA, don't think it was necessary to do it that way but I have private health insurance so it was done privately so I think they just wanted to make more money off me!
I have mine in 4 years now and for me it has been the best thing I have ever done. My periods stopped completely and I have been fine. I am now 48 and peri symptoms have only just begun to creep in so started hrt patch alongside coil. I am due to have mine removed next year but plan to have another one in assuming my gp agrees
