49 and still no symptoms of peri

Fieldsofgold1 · 24/03/2024 16:49

I am 49 and still don't seem to have any peri symptoms. My cycle is still regular and occasionally varies by a few days either way.

I'm more prone to low mood and anxiety these days but other than this I haven't yet been affected by peri.

My mother had her menopause at 48 and says she had no symptoms at all. Her periods just stopped and never came back.

Surely at my age I must be in peri?

I’m 50 and the same

Don't go looking for trouble,, it will find you when it's ready...
Not every one has the same symptoms.

Floralnomad · 24/03/2024 16:54

I was about 55/56 before my periods became erratic and I’ve never had any symptoms of anything .

Hadalifeonce · 24/03/2024 16:55

Apart from about a year of non regular periods, and some hot flushes, I had no symptoms.

LoserWinner · 24/03/2024 17:14

I had no peri symptoms at all. When my (28 day regular) period was late at 55, I had a dreadful panic that I might be pregnant, but a test soon proved that wrong. I never had another period, no hot flushes, no mood changes, no weight gain, absolutely no symptoms at all except no more periods. Some of us are genuinely lucky like that.

JinglingSpringbells · 24/03/2024 17:41

That's not unusual.

I was 52 before anything - missed one period- and a vague hot flush.

SilverBranchGoldenPears · 24/03/2024 17:46

I‘m 50 and still regular as clockwork. My mum and maternal grandmother were both 54 when their periods just stopped so it’s not that odd

I was the same. Didn't notice any peri menopause symptoms and periods stopped at 52. No weight gain, hot flushes, anxiety etc etc almost 3 years on and still no symptoms except I feel tired sometimes but I'm nearly 55 fgs !!!
Fingers crossed you are as lucky OP ☺️

I didn't have peri either.

Marblessolveeverything · 24/03/2024 18:32

Same age here and the same. My mother was very late 50s and had no symptoms just periods stopped. I am hoping I follow suit.

I do wonder if the years on the pill have an impact? I would have taken it for decades. Just something that would be interesting to know if any impact.

EmpressaurusOfTheScathingTinsel · 24/03/2024 18:35

I’m 50, was never on the pill & I’ve only had mild symptoms for a few months.

brookboxed · 24/03/2024 18:41

I am the same but I still went on HRT for the protective benefits. Even if you aren't feeling the symptoms it doesn't mean you aren't peri or that you aren't close to menopause or that your body isn't suffering the loss of estrogen. My mother's periods just stopped one month and never came back in her early 50's.

If you don't want to do HRT or feel the need that is fine but just because you don't yet have symptoms doesn't mean you aren't getting very close to menopause.

OhcantthInkofaname · 24/03/2024 18:43

My sister was 56 at menopause. Never felt she needed hormones as her ovaries slowly ceased to produce hormones.

A friend had a surprise pregnancy at 55. My mother was 41. I had a hysterectomy at 40.

Actually medically, what we call menopause is actually called the Climacteric. Menopause is the actual cessation of menses. Climactric is peri, and post as well as menopause.

JinglingSpringbells · 24/03/2024 18:46

Is there some confusion going on?

Not having symptoms during peri doesn't mean no symptoms post menopause.

I had a very 'easy' peri.
But once my periods stopped at 53 ish I went straight into hourly flushes, night sweats and insomnia.

Symptoms don't stop once your periods do- for some women that's when they start. And for around 10% of women they continue for ever.

RaininSummer · 24/03/2024 18:46

I was unaware if any phase I could call peri and think my last period was around the age of 56. All fairly uneventful.

JinglingSpringbells · 24/03/2024 18:48

Only 15% of women have no peri symtpoms.

I agree, @ClemmyTine !😂

I’ll turn 50 later this year, OP, and still have regular periods, slightly shorter than 10 years ago, but no major changes. I wouldn’t worry about it, at least you haven’t got flooding or other unpleasant symptoms.

Re. HRT. I asked my doctor about it recently and apparently here in the US, they don’t typically start it until you’re post-menopausal. I was surprised as I assumed it would be earlier.

dizzydizzydizzy · 24/03/2024 19:34

Late 50s. I didn't even know I'd been through the menopause (no periods for some years due to Mirena coil). A friend of mine has the same experience.
