Mirena worth it?

Or should I just use the progesterone tablets?

I’m going to start HRT to help with some mild symptoms but mainly to protect against osteoporosis as I’ve just had a diagnosis of osteopenia. I’m 51 and have family history of osteoporosis.

It seems very difficult to get a Mirena. I have to get through the local sexual health clinic and there are no appointments showing. You have to keep going in and checking apparently…

I had a Mirena fitted last summer after several months of v heavy periods, cramps, clots etc. GP did bloods and organised scan first to rule out any other issues but in my case think it was perimenopausal issues. Was previously on mini pill for years with no issues. All fine since I got it fitted, bit of spotting/cramping for couple of weeks after
fitting then nothing much since then (8 months). Odd day of very light spotting but glad I went for it as controlled the heavy and prolonged bleeds.

I was using the combo patches that had oestrogen in all month and then added progesterone for half the month. Swapped to oestrogen gel as the patches caused sore spots and also didn’t feel sexy with black glue squares all over my butt which never quite came off in the shower when scrubbed.

I take the utrogesten at bedtime and haven’t noticed any ill effects at all, except that my period is more like a regular one than it was on the patches - it had all but disappeared on them, but had it for 5 days now, which is annoying. But not heavy or painful.

One thing I would highly recommend to everyone is to ask for testosterone if your sex drive or orgasms aren’t what the once were. I noticed that my clitoris had shrunk away to almost nothing. I’ve only been on it a couple of weeks and already noticed the strength of my orgasm is so much better! I was told it probably won’t help the physical shrinkage but as long as the sensation is there I don’t mind too much. Wish I’d been on it sooner.

Hi OP, I think mine is great.

It's stopped my flooding so I'm no longer anaemic, I don't have to take the horrible utrogestan and I don't need to think about changing anything but my patches twice a week.

I got my last one fitted by a private GP. I got the device using an NHS prescription that my GP gave me and I took the device to a private GP who charged £200 to fit it.

I got a much better fitting experience, a lot less painful and she made me stay OK the bed for some time afterwards which I certainly didn't get on NHS!

Bit of cramping, bleeding stopped after a month. I only had one more period with sore breasts and now I just get cramping and a bit of tiny spitting each month. No sore breasts which is a dream.

I have a Mirena. I was flooding and in a really bad way in the perimenopause and was about to jump off a cliff, and was given Eostrogel and Utrogestan. They both made me feel bleuggghhh TBH but the Utrogestan made me feel like death. I then went to my GP and had the coil fitted. It didn't hurt, I took some painkillers or paracetamol beforehand, it was like a smear test. It cramped for a couple of days, but within days I was a new person.

I felt so good, I lapsed off the oestrogen, and then stopped taking it. I now just have the coil. My God, I felt like a new woman and I was bouncing off the walls. I am a bit tired now, 4 years later, and just about to start my own thread, but I was like a new person. I had a bit of spotting on and off and then in the last year I have seen nothing. I had a medical recently and they said to leave it in for another year (so 5) and see how I go.

I am now 54 and I don't know if I have finished the menopause or not. I have no spotting. I may have even circumnavigated it.

SpaDaysAreMyFave · 27/03/2024 09:20

Call up your GP and say you want to swap out the progesterone for a coil and the P is making you feel ill. They should be able to fit it for you. Mine was done by a very senior nurse.

The GP's know very little about this unless they have taken their own time to familiarise themselves with it. I only know about these things as I was all over a Meno forum like a rash, reading threads for hours. I did it as I read that Eostrogel and a coil are the gold standard for HRT.

WhereAreWeNow · 28/03/2024 19:17

Definitely worth it for me. It's been life changing. My periods were so heavy and painful before. Now I don’t have periods at all. It's so liberating!

WhereAreWeNow · 28/03/2024 19:18

And it means I can just take estrogen for HRT without having to take progesterone on top.

I had one to manage my nightmare periods after the kids. First 6 months was fat, spotty and emotional, with tummy pains and spotting. Since then, no periods, no pain, no spots (or spotting), and have had it replaced with no issues despite a funny shaped uterus (apparently). It's now going to stay in place to see me through the menopause probably

Whitebubles · 28/03/2024 20:03

The cheapest and quick way to push on women to have it by NHS:) I'm menopausal since I was 35 never went for mirena. Vaginal utrogestan for 10 years for me the most natural and no side effects way.

AlexandraPeppernose · 28/03/2024 20:40

I had the mirena fitted in December. I've had 2 previously which stopped my periids. My GP no longer does it so I had to go to the sexual clinic and had to say it was for contraception reasons as they won't do it otherwise. My periods haven't stopped but are much lighter and no more night time flooding. My dh has also commented that my moods are less volatile. I also bled every day for 2 months very lightly. But very pleased I had it .

Reachforthestars00 · 28/03/2024 21:12

I've had two Mirenas and think they are great. Absolutely no problems and almost no periods - except the odd very light spotting a few times a year. Both were fitted by my GP. The first hurt like hell, but I had just had a baby and was probably quite tender. The second was fine and no worse than a smear test. I'm due a replacement this year and will definitely getting another. That should see me through the menopause, as I'll be mid 50s by then. I've been lucky with perimenopause symptoms, only really affected by insomnia and the odd warm night, bit nothing major. No idea if this is related to Mirena though.
