Using Ovestin - does it get worse before it gets better??

I've been struggling off and on with itching for a few months, and started using Ovestin externally about 5 days ago - but since then I feel like it's worse, more 'burny' and uncomfortable - is that possible? Or am I just more aware of the issue because I'm trying to deal with it, and noticing it more??

It hasn't really felt that acute before, the itching would come and go, but just now it all feels a bit beaten up and a no-go area! Which is the opposite of what I'm trying to achieve! 😖

Don't know whether to stick with it and hope things improve or stop and see if that makes a difference? Any advice or similar experiences anyone?

I had to change to Ovestin because I had a reaction to Vagifem, so it's not inconceivable that you may be having a reaction to the Ovestin. I have never had a problem with it since I started using it nearly 12 months ago. If it was me I would stop using it and go back to your GP for advice on how to move forward. They may suggest something else you can use.

Thanks @Lallybroch I do wonder if I should maybe stop for a bit and see what happens. Worst case scenario is that it stays the same or gets worse, and then I'll know it wasn't the cream and I can give it another go. It might take a bit longer if I pause it, but at least I would have more confidence in the treatment...

I found it burned to begin with but it did wear off. I can't remember how long it took though, maybe a couple of weeks? I use it twice a week now and it's mostly fine but every now and then is a little bit burny for some reason.

Also I wonder if upping my HRT would make a difference? Currently on 75mg patches - if I increase the dose would it help with the dryness/itching? I've been wondering about this anyway as my mood dipped quite low again last month...

Snap! I had a bad reaction to Vagifem. It’s estradiol and Ovestin is estriol. Ovestin has been like a miracle for me. I guess it depends which suits each individual x

Exactly this. I am 6 months in to using Ovestin, apply it twice a week on the same days I change my patch. I do find it is occasionally burning or itchy, but overall it is having a very positive effect and all the "urinary infection" and abdo pain I was suffering has gone completely.

Hi @Misthios I know this is an old thread but I'm interested in how long it took for your symptoms to go. I'm struggling with exactly what you describe and looking for a bit of hope. I've been using Ovestin for 2.5 weeks now and no massive improvement yet.

Xxx

SilkieChick · 17/12/2024 08:34

@ShetlandTony hang in there - after a few weeks of slow improvement I'm now a few months in and my symptoms have improved so much I almost forget to do my twice-weekly applications AND we managed to DTD twice this weekend with no serious repercussions for my nether regions! A few weeks ago I wouldn't have thought it possible...

I think the game changer for me was also using an emollient the GP prescribed - Hydromol - in between times. I use this most days and apply fairly liberally. It seems to moisturise well and stops the broken skin that kept recurring, I haven't had an issue with this since I started using it.

Thanks@SilkieChick . I'll keep the faith! Great to know it worked out well for you. Xxx
