Can’t handle Utrogestan

inthewoods4 · 11/03/2024 17:10

Hi everyone, after just three days on Utro I’ve had to stop, it sent me into a panic, followed by a real depressive mood. I’m now panicking that there won’t be anything to help me. I started HRT for anxiety and low mood so this hasn’t helped! Has anyone else come off this, and how long until it leaves the system? x

Loads of women can’t handle it orally. Vaginal use is much better, with far fewer side effects.

inthewoods4 · 11/03/2024 17:17

I should have said, I was taking it vaginally

I was the same. It fact it made me quite ill.

I tried taking it both ways and it made no difference. I spoke to my Dr, who put me on Provera. I had no issues from the first day.

There are alternatives if it doesn't suit you. I would have come off HRT if it had been the only option.

Itisnearlyspring · 11/03/2024 17:54

I found it affected me more vaginally, maybe becuase more is absorbed. Have you tried it orally?

inthewoods4 · 11/03/2024 17:57

I haven’t, but I’m too scared to try. I feel very depressed.

I took myself off it for the same reason. It took me ages to realise it was the utrogestan causing the extreme low mood and terrible anxiety. I went cold turkey for four months and have just today started on evorel sequi patches which contain a different kind of progesterone to the utrogestan (synthetic rather than body identical). I'm hoping I will get on better with this.
I'd come off the utro if I were you.

inthewoods4 · 11/03/2024 18:15

Yes, I’m off them, still feel very low but I’m thinking they take a few days to leave the system?

I couldn’t handle progesterone patches or tablets or vaginal use and in desperation had a mirena fitted which I really didn’t want. I’m pleased to say that it’s fine, and has also stopped my torrential periods too.

Utrogestan taken vaginally doesn't usually have the same effects as taken orally. Often with perseverance any initial effects resolve. If it's not working for you OP suggest you see your Dr to discuss other options. These would include an oral progestin, Mirena coil or combined patch. https://thebms.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/14-BMS-TfC-Progestogens-and-endometrial-protection-01H.pdf

Can you remember how long it took for it to come out of your system? I’m worried I’m never going to feel better x

The half life is very short so it should leave your system today. I would recommend you make an appointment today to enquire about alternatives.

inthewoods4 · 12/03/2024 08:24

Thank you. I’m a bit frightened to try anything else, I’ve not left my bed for the pad two days and have felt completely hopeless.

I would make an appointment to ask about alternatives. Don't be scared to try again. I know not only myself but a few of my acquaintances , were unable to take it but were fine on other progesterone methods.
I can't even tell I'm taking the Provera, no side effects at all and my friend felt the same when she moved to patches.

It doesn't stay in your system long and the effects do go away. I do understand how you feel though, it made me feel wretched. Try not to worry x

Octypuss · 12/03/2024 08:56

Like a previous poster, my doctor changed me over to Provera due to intolerance of Utrogestan (I felt terrible on it). I've had no issues with Provera at all Flowers

Touty · 12/03/2024 08:58

Utrogestan is awful, even vaginally it made me so depressed. Try something else.

Newgolddream70 · 12/03/2024 09:02

Another vote for Provera as Utrogestan made me so depressed! Provera is a synthetic progesterone and I am sure someone will come along and say it's 'not as good for you' but in my opinion, being depressed and crying all the time is also not good for you!

inthewoods4 · 12/03/2024 10:18

I’ve just spoken to my GP, she has suggested I try the Evorel Sequi and see how I get on… after that if it doesn’t work she said I can try Provera

Would you consider the Mirena coil?

inthewoods4 · 12/03/2024 11:07

Possibly, only I don’t like the idea of not being able to just stop if it doesn’t agree with me.

So glad you are getting sorted. x

Thank you, I really hope this works, with a history of PND feeling like this is bringing back a lot of memories I’d rather forget x

I've switched to a mirena. The mood impact of the utrogestan took at least a week to leave my system, but it did every time.
