Did anyone else feel anxious when on Utrogestan? Does that ease off? I’m on second cycle…

I was anxious and horribly depressed on utrogestan and no it didn’t ease off. I had to stop taking it and switch to another type of progestogen.

@TangoTarantella thanks for your reply. Can you remember how long you tried Utrogestan for before deciding it wasn’t for you? I know it can take three months for HRT side effects to ease off if they are going to… xx

I had panic attacks when I was on it so I came off after about 3 months. I hadn’t had them ever before and haven’t since. I didn’t go on to anything else, just stopped, which was a mistake in that I don’t sleep but had slept well whilst on it.

It took a while to work out that it was the utrogestan that was causing the mood problems. I first tried changing to a different type of oestrogen then stopped taking the mini pill then switched the progestogen. It took about 6 months to work it out.

@TangoTarantella thank you, that’s interesting. I am on cycle two, two days in. Last cycle I was in A&E on the 14th day, with anxiety (though I thought I was dying of course). I can feel it building again, I am vibrating and feeling fizzy inside. Can’t sit still. I’m tense and clenching. I’m on mini pill for PMDD… Have felt a positive change with the estrogen gel, more cognitive, less brain fog, but definitely feel odd at the minute. Can I ask what you had to switch to please? Thanks for your help by the way xx

@Somanyquestionstoaskaboutthis thank you. I’m on estrogen gel, still have uterus and on symptoms alone I think I am in peri. I’m on mini pill for PMDD so I haven’t had a proper period since 2019. No idea what my true period cycle would be doing right now but it’s likely I’d be having a 28 day cycle like I used to pre mini pill… unless peri has already changed my cycle. if I take estrogen gel I have to take a progesterone too, so not sure what options would be if Utrogestan doesn’t work for me xx

@Itsrainingoverhere hey, sorry you have PMDD, it’s awful. I was on combined pill from age 15 ish for pain. I stopped about 13 years later when I had to have an unrelated operation. I didn’t go back on. After having two kids I developed PMDD, it got worse and worse each month. GP offered anti-depressants or mini pill as I was over 35. I went for the mini pill. I have no idea if it’s the usual treatment for PMDD or not, but it made a huge difference to intrusive thoughts, dark thoughts, irritability, overwhelm, low mood etc and extremely heavy flow. 3 yrs later (during covid) I developed dizziness which causes anxiety which causes dizziness etc etc, GP listened to all my symptoms and said peri is a possibility and to try HRT, but not stop the mini pill yet until I have noticed improvement with HRT. I’m being referred back to ENT for dizziness (they diagnosed vestibular migraines which present as dizziness in peri women) and a referral for long covid clinic as things basically fell apart after I got covid the first time! So for me, mini pill was a lifesaver for PMDD. And EMDR therapy. That was a massive help. Expensive (£550 ish for 13 sessions) but I told myself it was an investment and saved like mad to pay for it. I also used reflexology to manage PMDD at the start. Now, I struggle daily with dizzy and anxiety which both feel hormonal to me. Should probably go back to reflexology actually. Awaiting private CBT for anxiety/dizzy/peri. Best of luck finding some treatments/meds that work for you. Hope your GP is a helpful one. Sending love Xx
