House temperature

Age 66, is it normal not to be able to tolerate a very warm house because of menopause? I don’t have hot flushes any more. Got house heating arguments galore because of it.

Probably. I can't stand the heat yet I'm always cold. I'm blaming that on menopause. Or thyroid.

JinglingSpringbells · 24/02/2024 07:49

Do you get hot in other situations?

Although you say you aren't having any other menopause symptoms, you might be- but just not linking them. Some women complain of aching joints, bladder issues, lack of energy, and all kinds of things but don't know they are linked to loss of estrogen.

Intolerance to heat can still be part of menopausal symptoms.

@JinglingSpringbells thanks. yes to being hot generally too, for example I can be outside in the middle of winter with a much thinner coat than I ever could. Or in the car. House is far too warm for me, but my partner feels the cold and is unwell. I would prefer cooler air and a jumper. Yet I am in thin t shirts. Yes always tired, joints ok though I had that problem in my 50s. Yes also to weak bladder. I never took HRT, I was in total ignorance about menopause. Do you think there’s anything I could do at this stage?

OP - I can sympathise. All my life I couldn’t tolerate cold but since perimenopause it’s the opposite. I don’t have hot flushes, I just overheat quickly and it’s an unbearable feeling. My family doesn’t recognise this new me. I’m hoping I’ll return to a more normal temperature range in the future. For now, 17 degrees at home feels enough.

Yes! Consider HRT!

I just knew when you posted that there was a possibility of other stuff going on.
So many women put up with stuff and don't realise it's all down to loss of estrogen.

You're not too old. (My consultant started a woman 80+ on HRT.)

Your GP might not be up to speed on prescribing to older women, even though it's 'allowed' - you start on a low dose of a patch or gel. If necessary you might need to pay to see a private consultant, but it may well be worth forking out for that.

@Letsbepractical yes that’s my ideal temperature too! I used to love wearing winter jumpers but not any more. Strange thing is that I like the summer heat outside with a breeze. It’s just inside home, car, shops. Hope it gets better for you.

Thanks again @JinglingSpringbells! I can’t believe how ignorant I have been. I can honestly say that I don’t remember even one conversation with friends, with former female work colleagues, with my lovely late Mum, nothing. I am so pleased that it is now more open and future generations will at least be more aware than many in my generation.

In recent times, whenever I’ve listened to radio programmes or read up, I honestly thought I had missed the HRT boat, and also I had not joined the dots anyway. So from your message I will look into. Thank you again for your replies.

@DatingDinosaur Thanks for replying and i hope things improve for you! I’ve had my thyroid checked and apparently all normal.

"Strange thing is that I like the summer heat outside with a breeze. It’s just inside home, car, shops."

Could it be less about the temperature and more about the stuffiness? Just wondering because you said you're alright in the heat outside with a breeze.

I recently learned (in a menopause workshop at work) that you can be on HRT for the rest of your life if you want. Glad you've had thyroid issues ruled out - some of the symptoms of thyroid are remarkably similar to menopause.
