Am I taking too much or too little oestrogel

Hi everyone,

I've just turned 48 and been taking ultrogestan and in the past month or so gone from one to two pumps of oestrogel. At first I felt great. I started feeling like my old self, lots more energy, happy, no anxiety it was great! But in the last two weeks I've felt flat, unmotivated, shattered and just not quite right. I don't understand what's changed?! I'm not sure if I decrease my oestrogel or go up even more.

It's annoying, you think you figure it out and then you almost got square one again 😟

I spent so much time trying to get quantities right! It's a never ending process.
What I have found is that it's a fairly quick impact so up the dose and see how things are. If you get side effects then dial it back sown, they disappear quite quickly
The default start position seems verylow dose fwiw

I'd try three. I was the same and three pumps is right for me. I thought I'd try four out of curiosity but within a couple days I had a zit and felt nauseous and my boobs ached. I think those are signs of too much.

Cherryblossom200 · 20/02/2024 21:40

Hmm I'm wondering if it was too much, purely because I felt quite sick last week. So I might just go back down to one and just occasionally use two pumps if I feel need it. It works almost instantly on me, if I struggle to go to sleep I rub in the gel and quickly I'll be asleep. It's crazy.

Definitely the quantity isn't right though, because I felt great for ages. I was so happy as I felt like a better version of my old self 😂 I want to feel like that again!

Another one here saying to try going up not down. I’m on four 🤪

Cherryblossom200 · 20/02/2024 21:44

Can you go up that much?

Do you see the difference with your energy levels? Literally I feel shattered and flat all the time at the moment.

If you feel tired and upping the oestrogen isn't helping then I'd consider testosterone. That was the thing that made the big difference for me

When I spoke to the Newson clinic Dr she basically didn't even bat an eyelid and put me on it as I was doing so much exercise that she said I was definitely depleted.
This was later confirmed with a blood test !

Cherryblossom200 · 20/02/2024 21:57

That's what I was thinking, that it was the testosterone. I'm going to have a blood test and then hopefully be referred to an nhs menopause clinic - no idea the waiting list though 😬

I’m also on testosterone. My levels were dropping fast. I’ve been on it about a month and no problems thus far.

If you're in the southwest and can afford it I recommend Sarah Gray based at Truro. Private menopause specialist, utterly brilliant.

Cherryblossom200 · 21/02/2024 11:17

I live near London, would I have to visit in person? How much does it all cost? Thanks 🙏

Newson clinic do a testosterone specific consultant which is a lower rate than the general one btw
All on the phone

I've been using it for three years now (started at age 46). I started with one pump and that wasn't sufficient, so upped it to two. I'm now on 2.5 most of the time (see later comments), but was told that any more than 2 pumps at a time is not as effective, so if you need more than 2 pumps, it's best to apply it in two doses - one in the morning and one in the evening. If you feel sick then IME it's too much. Your need for more/less might not be continuous too. I sometimes need more and sometimes need less, depending on my mood, stage in my cycle and time of year.

Going against the grain a bit here @Cherryblossom200 but you can't always link feelings of lack of energy etc to HRT.
There could be other reasons , for example a viral bug, low Vit D, anemia or something similar.

How long have you been on HRT? I can't see that in your posts.

I've been on HRT for a long time (private gynaecologist, expert in hormones) and I started on half a pump on their advice. I increased it to 1 pump which got rid of flushes, then 2 pumps that dealt with insomnia. This was over about 3 months.

I use 1 pump am and another pm. 2 pumps at once made me nauseous.

I was also given a very individualised way to use it- which was estrogen-only for 3 months. This allowed me to judge the effects of estrogen without the 'downside' of progesterone (which can throw up all kinds of side effects.)

It's just my opinion, but you may be jumping the gun to consider testosterone. It's important to get your estrogen right (and, by the way, my consultants says blood tests for estrogen are not reliable - I've never had one and as I'd be paying for it , if it was helpful it would be done.)

I've found the issue. I've started taking collegen powder and I think I need to lower the dose and it's making me feel awful! I stopped a day ago and feel back to normal al again. But I've upped my oestrogel dose to 1.5 pumps and feel like I've got my energy back again! Phew.

The collagen powder is amazing. But I just need to work out how to take it 😂

Thanks everyone! I'm still going to get some testosterone into the mix at some point as well.

Hi,
I've been taking HRT for over a year. I swapped to Oestrogel and micronised progesterone in December last year. My menopause symptoms have eased massively but I've got so much dizziness and digestion trouble since starting this regime!
The dizziness is the worst! Does this mean the gel isn't good for me? I'm on 3 pumps each morning.
Headaches are daily too. I'm so fed up of swapping and finding what I think is right then something else crops up! I'm feeling like stopping taking it but really don't want to go back to all the meno symptoms.
Has anyone else experienced dizziness after approx 3 months? It definitely isn't getting any better.
Patches stopped working for me previously so I feel stuck :(
