Mirena Coil + Evorel 50 and told to take Utrogestan as well!

Hi ladies,
So I am confused. I've been using the Mirena Coil for many years now. No problem with it, (best thing since sliced bread!) no bleeds either. I am 52yrs and I've been told that my current use of the Mirena coil will be my last- valid 8 yrs of which (I'm sure is due to expire this year). For the last year I have been experiencing pre meno ( quite bad actually ) hot flushes etc. so my GP prescribe me Evorel 50 along with Utrogestan. I told my GP I do not have any periods so why has she prescribed the Utrogestan if i have the Mirena Coil and not expired. Surely the Mirena Coil acts the same as the Utrogestan? Has any of you ladies been advise the same with the same multi combo as mine?

If you were having breakthrough bleeding I could see the point, but not if you aren’t.
Hopefully @jingling will see this and help you. And I can’t see why you can’t have one more coil.

The Mirena only lasts for 5 years for HRT purposes to protect the womb, however it can be safely left in/is effective for contraception for longer in menopausal women

@cathyandclaire Oh ok, that makes sense kinda. So I can take the Utrogestan thou I am not having any periods? and if I do will my periods start again ? I have over 15 yrs plus without them.
The evorel 50 is working well with me.

Its license for HRT is 5 years, not 8.

If you take 100mg utrogestan every night it shouldn’t cause bleeding. Could you not get your coil replaced instead and then you wouldn’t need the utrogestan. I’m sure there isn’t an upper age limit x

If you still have a womb you must take progesterone

Oestrogen only is for ladies who have no womb

hothotheatbag · 10/02/2024 13:24

@bestofall I think that's the confusion she is technically taking progesterone with the coil in place, so this seems odd to be doubling up.

But maybe it's run out, so I'd have it removed or just get a new coil if it works well for you. I didn't know there as an age limit on them.

I have recently had a mirena coil inserted as I was getting bad breakthrough bleeding on Evorel 75 patches plus Utrogestan tablets. Apparently this is quite a common problem with tablets due to the hormone level fluctuations that can cause. It took a few months to settle down but now I have no bleeding at all. I had been about 10 years without a period when I started on the HRT.

As I remember the instruction was for HRT purposes the coil would expire after 5 years but it was recommended I should ask for it to be replaced after 4 years as the hormone levels would be starting to decrease and there is a risk the bleeding could come back.

Sounds like you were prescribed Utrogestan as your coil has been in place for too long and to be releasing enough hormone for HRT purposes.

As you have managed well with a coil I would ask for a new one to be fitted instead of taking the Utrogestan. You don't need both and you could find yourself with brealkthrough bleeding on Utrogestan where you didnt have it before.

To agree with others.

If the Mirena suits you, get a new one as part of HRT.
It lasts for HRT between 4 and 5 years (there's some contradiction online on this but most say 4 years. It's longer for contraception and in older women, when the hormone runs out, it acts like a normal coil.)

You aren't too old for a new one, in fact I was offered one (privately) as part of my HRT when I was older than you are now.

ShakespearesSisters · 11/02/2024 09:19

Coming to say the same thing as many others. I've just had my coil replaced as it's 5 yrs was up as I'm using it with HRT. She said could go 10 yrs now if just for contraception (as I'm older) but must be changed by 5 yrs if using it as HRT as you don't get the womb protection otherwise. It ended up getting changed 5 yrs to the day. So I was given some progesterone capsules to take for a week during the cross over. Loved the sleepy side effect, best nights of sleep in ages!
