Right or wrong type of Utrogestan

Ive been given Utrogestan and was advised they can be used vaginally. Do these really dissolve in the vagina?

Also, why is it necessary to have progesterone daily at 100mg when some have the coil which is only releasing 21 mcg a day. Can someone explain please. Since I was a teen each time before a period my boobs would always get very sore so I presume i was always high in progesterone and even now at almost 50, not currently on any hrt, I'm getting painful boobs, sweating as if a period is coming but nothing.

Any advice anyone.

With the coil it's absorbed directly into the uterus where as taken orally it has to be metabolised and absorbed so presumably the dose will need to be a lot higher in tablet form. I think it's also a different form of progesterone so the dosing won't be the same.
In regards to being advised use your tablets vaginally I found the information below, but sounds like that is a last resort and it should be taken orally if possible.

I would advise going back to the person who prescribed it or a pharmacist to discuss if you're not sure.

There is no other sort. You've been given the right sort.

(There is a 200mg capsule but it's now only licensed for fertility treatment unless your GP is willing to prescribe off-licence.)

Yes, they dissolve.

Have you been advised by your GP to use them vaginally?
I'm wondering why you're asking. It's an option (and how I use it as my consultant says it's better) but you can take them orally if you prefer.

It's not usual to use them vaginally every single day unless you can't use them orally. For example, if it's relevant, you're going to have to insert them after sex, as they are used last thing at night.

You can't compare the progestogen in the coil with Utrogestan. It's completely different. Synthetic, more powerful, etc.
They are all different and the doses are different.

Have a look at this table and you can see the products and the amount.

I'm a GP and yes you can use the oral Utrogestan vaginally at the same dose.

There is a vaginal Utrogestan but that is not prescribed for HRT purposes, it's used in IVF.

Neither is licensed in the UK for HRT use vaginally. But that's not to say women can't use them that way, or that drs can't prescribe off-licence,

The 200mgs is exactly the same but bigger.

I've used both as HRT. A few years ago, the 200mgs was available for HRT then the licensing seemed to change.

I can request either as it's a private prescription. The only difference is the 200mgs come with a plastic applicator and are very pricey - more than twice the cost of 100mgs.

I was advised by a private gynaecologist then the script sent through my Gp, NHS. My surgery and Gp often make mistakes with scripts products and dosage.

The gynecologist said to try the Utrogestan and some prefer to use them vaginally to avoid side effects. When I opened them I wasn't sure if I had being given the right ones as the coating seems quite plastic like. I also asked on a Facebook group I am in and I got totally mixed answers about them. It's good to know they are the correct ones.

@Tootsey11 They are the right ones. I've used them for years from a private consultant.

The coating is not plastic.

If someone on Facebook is saying they are the 'wrong' sort, they're the ones confused.

The only thing you may want to consider is that it's best to insert them last thing at night. if you're sexually active, you're going to have to work around that (and use them afterwards.)
