Peeing so much in the night

Help!
I've started to want to wee all the time in the night, like every few minutes until I finally fall asleep. I feel like my bladder is full shortly after just going.

I always restrict fluids in the evening anyway and don't have caffeine apart from in the morning.

Is there any other help? Anyone else gone through this? I googled and apparently it's quite common

Btw I can't take HRT because of blood clotting gene.

Could it be a UTI if it is a new thing?
Or is there something that is causing irritation to your bladder? Something you are eating in the evening? If you are dehydrated your urine is more concentrated and can be irritating.

Id get checked for a UTI first.

Maybe pop to see your GP?

It's sometimes a sign of kidney disease (this is well known and it happens more to older people whose kidneys aren't 100%) but it could also be pre-diabetes or diabetes.)

See your GP for some tests is probably best.

JinglingSpringbells · 25/01/2024 08:34

Obviously as you've posted in the meno forum you think it might be connected with that?

If you are peri meno or post meno it could be caused by loss of estrogen (the whole thing is called GUS- genito urinary syndrome) and it's due to the bladder lining thinning. The treatment is estrogen cream/tablet in the vagina (from your GP.)

Restricting fluids will make it worse as your urine will be more concentrated and irritating.

Overactive bladder syndrome?

Diabetes?

olderbutwiser · 25/01/2024 08:55

Check out vaginal atrophy. (Obviously not named by anyone sympathetic to the plight of women in their prime).

it’s a tiny local dose so people who can’t take other HRT can often use it. But I found it transformational.

@olderbutwiser Thankfully it's been replaced by the abbreviation GUM but that's a bit of a mouthful!

The thing about atrophy is it would usually affect bladders all day not just at bedtime.

I still think a kidney function test (blood test does the job) is a good idea. Just to rule things out.

Ovestin. Game changer. I was exactly the same as you.

Ovestin isn't HRT.

pharmachameleon · 25/01/2024 10:06

I'm exactly the same! It drives me crazy. I'm on HRT and use Ovestin cream internally and I don't feel they have helped much with this. I definitely don't have diabetes and my kidney function is fine. I have come to the conclusion that it's psychological. I feel I won't be able to sleep if I need a wee so I jump to the toilet about 5 times in about 30minutes before I finally fall asleep. We have an en-suite in the bedroom so I literally roll, out of bed in the dark and go to the toilet. I probably wouldn't do this if I had to walk to another bathroom. It doesn't cause a problem if I'm exhausted and fall asleep quickly. I think I have now trained my bladder to do this and I need to try and train it back to not do this! The trick is to hold off and try and fall asleep with the feeling of slightly needing a wee but not sure how successful this will be!

Augustus40 · 25/01/2024 15:05

I have to wee as much as 4 times a night but am wary to try vaginal creams as very susceptible to side effects.

Not on HRT either but I don't need it other than this plus extra thirsty since my periods stopped. It isn't diabetes or anything. I get checked for that annually being on bp meds.

Annoying but at least I get back to sleep fine thanks to magnesium.

Vaginal oestrogen
New overactive bladder support product from Healthspan
Melatonin or similar to improve quality of sleep
Daytime bladder training (continual urge to
go can simply be a “bad habit” that you can train your brain out of
Compression socks (in case it’s poorer lymph drainage with age)
2 hours lying down in the afternoon/evening (for same reason as socks)
HRT (improves elasticity in pelvic organs and reduces urinary urges)

PopRay80 · 15/02/2024 17:56

I had this (I’m perimenopausal). I was up around 7 times in the night.
Vaginal oestrogen is an absolute life saver!
Google vaginal dystrophy.
You put one tablet in your vagina every day for 2 weeks and then down to twice a week.
I have sleep issues due to perimenopause but not because of needing to pee all the time (anxiety is my main issue!).

Yes I'm using Vagifem and it's hugely improved my constant weeing. You use every day for 2 weeks then just twice a week.

dahliaaa · 16/02/2024 17:29

For those using vagifem for urinary issues how long did it take to make a difference. I'm nearly 4 weeks in but no improvements yet.

AnnaMagnani · 16/02/2024 17:33

Vaginal oestrogen! No more getting out of bed. Both a cream for outside and a pessary for in.

I was told to ignore the instructions to do daily for 2 weeks then cut down to twice a week, and do daily for as long as I thought I needed and cut down slowly. Turned out that even though my symptoms aren't that bad, twice a week is not enough.

I now use the vagifem Mon/Thur, and the Estriol cream Sun/Wed.
Inbetween I use YES vaginal moisturiser.

It's an on going maintenance.
