Are menopause supplements any good?

I have a healthy diet and pre-menopause, I never thought I needed anything beyond vitamin D. Now I'm post menopausal, I'm less sure. I'm on the Evaril Conti patches but still have bad brain fog and lack of motivation/focus. That's the number one symptom I want to address.

I've been in the patches for a couple of months now and can tell no difference. What about magnesium or even testosterone supplements, are they any good?

I think I've been peri menopausal for over 5 years, lots of the symptoms but doctor laughed at me because I'm only 44. I started taking primrose, magnesium and vitamin d last year, I did notice a difference. I ran out before Christmas and only brought some last week, I noticed that my body become weaker not taking them.

I'm sure there is more but that's what I've been taking.

Thanks. Magnesium is supposed to be good. But then I've also heard that most supplements are completely unnecessary if you eat reasonably well! Except for vitamin D.

I've just bought magnesium citrate with vitamin D and Zinc supplement, after doing some research on these things. Apparently, there are many forms of magnesium! Magnesium citrate absorbs better so I guess that's a good one to take. It combines well with bit D and zinc. Again, this is something new I've learnt - that some vitamins cancel each other out whist other combinations boost the overall effect together.

I got the Magnesium glycinate one, really difficult to know which one as so many?. I know what you mean, I am trying to eat better more fruit and veg but even though I don’t eat alot I am always hungry. You sound like you know your stuff.

Leftoversgalore · 23/01/2024 21:20

I use mag glycinate and testosterone.

I sleep like I did pre children and I am back to normal again after a good 12months of exhaustion, depression and crying.

I look forward to things again. I also have the highest oestrogen patch which helps massively.

Maybe you need to eat more if you're hungry?

Re the supplement question - I take vit D, glucosemine sulphate and collagen. These are for osteoarthritis. I'm using up some berocca multi vits but I doubt they do much, and some cod liver oil capsules I found at my mum's house.

I keep meaning to add magnesium.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 23/01/2024 23:27

I use spray magnesium and it's been very helpful.

B12 deficiency can cause brain fog and other symptoms - and B12 deficiency can happen during / after menopause. Might be worth getting checked out (as taking over the counter supplements may not be substantial enough to counteract an existing deficiency (you may need prescription dose of B12, or injections)).

Are you exercising @TR888 ?
My consultant is in favour of HRT where appropriate, but they also push lifestyle- like exercise (daily), healthy eating, and even things like meditation, mindfulness, yoga etc. They are also quite anti supplements, (in the form of vits etc) except Vit D which everyone should take.

MagpiePi · 24/01/2024 07:59

Have you tried a higher dose of oestrogen?

It's really made a difference for me, still achy but no more dizzy spells like I was. I wish my doctor would allow me to have medication but because im still having periods they won't listen.

Cooking with turmeric helps brain fog as does upping one's nuts intake.

It worked for me plus I take b12.
