Utrogestan and bloating

Somethingmustbedone · 15/01/2024 21:33

Does anyone else experience excessive bloating and wind from taking progesterone? I had this for ages while taking the progesterone only pill (only realised that was what caused it when i stopped the pill at 55) but now that I’m on HRT the symptoms have returned. Are there any better alternatives?

Yes I looked about seven months pregnant for the two years I took utrogestan
It completely halted my digestion. Don't know about alternatives sorry

Ibizafun · 15/01/2024 22:54

No i have been taking 2 Utrogestan pills a night for years and have never had this.

LuckyCharmz · 15/01/2024 22:56

It can be inserted vaginally and absorbed straight into the blood stream to avoid this. Not tried it (I’ve got the mirena coil for the progesterone part of hrt) but read it many times, Newson clinic recommends this I believe.

Somethingmustbedone · 16/01/2024 07:08

@stirling , yes that’s pretty much me! I should have realised after
my experience on the mini pill.
@LuckyCharmz I’d read about that option, however the nhs website says that vaginal progesterone is only for fertility treatment. My GP had also suggested mirena which I don’t want due to reactions to hormonal treatments in the past. I prefer something that I can stop immediately.

will GPs in the UK prescribe utrogesan vaginal pessaries?

Yes my GP gave me the utrogestan pessaries, but you can just shove the normal tablets up with your fingers. Or use an ovestin applicator.

Somethingmustbedone · 16/01/2024 10:51

This guy a really helpful thank you, I have a review with my GP soon so will discuss with her then

I wouldn't discuss with the GP unless you really want the pessaries. Loads of women use it vaginally using the usual tablets.

It's how women take it in Europe.

Somethingmustbedone · 16/01/2024 18:16

@Leftoversgalore that’s interesting, I presume you think the GP will advise against it?

i think there might be an issue with it being off licence for use in this way?

My GP wasn't bothered. I think some are a bit more pedantic about it.

In fact it was a locum who gave me the 200mcg pessaries without even blinking. He was young though so presumably a bit more 'on it' than some of them might be.

I did switch to mirena though. My symptoms were almost as bad vaginally and it gave me thrush! But I'm prone to thrush and was V v sensitive to the utro.

Somethingmustbedone · 16/01/2024 18:44

@Leftoversgalore thanks again, that’s a pity that things didn’t improve with the pessaries. I’ve done some further reading and I’m also wondering if the continuous combined patches could be worth a try. Anything to limit progesterone going directly to my stomach!

LuckyCharmz · 16/01/2024 19:19

Utrogestan is bio identical. I believe the progesterone in patches is norethisterone, a synthetic form. I have a friend on it and it works well for her, depends on what you want.
im on a large meno Facebook group called the latte lounge where you can find lots more info.

Somethingmustbedone · 16/01/2024 19:46

Oh God, I turned into a she-devil when I had norethisterone several years ago - never again!! It’s two weeks til my GP appointment so I’m going to start on the vaginal utrogestan tonight as I can’t stand this bloating any longer. I’ll fess up when I see her and have a proper talk through the options, one of which might be having another go at managing without HRT.

thanks for the tip re the FB group, I shall have a look.

OP i was dead against mirena, tried it twice, had it out quickly each time.

Decided to give it another go and my moods are finally settled. The crying has stopped and I spent a good 5 months crying on utrogestan.

I sort of miss my periods (I know, weird) but it's worked so well for me.

And I was suicidal on three types of pill and utrogestan, and my normal. PMT.

Ginsoakedcatlady · 16/01/2024 20:57

Both my GP and my consultant gynaecologist have advised me to use the normal tablets vaginally. I do, but I still get bloated. Hasn’t helped at all.
