How do I find a private gynaecologist?

My periods stopped over five years' ago. Since June I have had post menopausal bleeding and despite seeing the doctor, she has gone very little about it. Reading up on it, it doesn't seem right and I am extremely concerned as it has got worse. Very different to periods, more discharge with blood in it. I contacted local private hospital but haven't heard back from them. The whole thing is getting me so depressed and I'm spending most of the day in bed, completely unmotivated. What is the best way to find a private gynaecologist as I really need to see someone for my own peace of mind.

Ask your GP, ask friends. Contact the local private hospital and ask who there Gynaecologists are and who specialises in menopausal issues. You can ask at the time, the the doctor requires a referral from your GP - most will, some not. You can also ask for a ball park figure of costs - initial consultation, tests, follow up consultations. The consultants' secretaries are the best people to ask. You will be looking at min of £150 initial consultation, £100 follow up and £200-300 blood tests

Also ask about drug costs - the consultant may write to your GP to ask them to prescribe and therefore get at NHS prescription rates, but the GP can refuse to do this (This certainly used to be the case - things may have changed).

You should be referred urgently on the NHS. This is a two week referral situation. Post menopausal bleeding isn’t normal and needs investigation. Go back to your GP and demand an urgent referral on the two week pathway. If necessary speak to the practice manager or PALS. Don’t wait around trying to go privately in a situation like this you’re better off with the NHS. DO NOT BE FOBBED OFF.

I can't believe your GP had fobbed you off.
This is a potentially serious problem which needs urgent attention.
Go and see a different GP immediately. You shouldn't have to pay a private doctor!
