post menopausal bleeding

I was on Depo provera for 5 years, came off it at 52, and two years later no period and assumed menopause - blood test and scans say so too.

I do have a long standing ovarian cyst but it's benign according to mri and CA125 test is low.

But this week out of the blue I started bleeding heavily like a heavy period; 7 pads a day bleeding. My GP refers instantly to 2 week pathway.... I am not on full HRT but am using on ovestin vaginal cream to ward off dryness and UTI.

worried about endometrial cancer. And it's christmas. anyone got any advice?

I've had endometrial cancer. Caught early it's very treatable. I was pre-menopause though. I had a full hysterectomy, tubes and ovaries removed and 4 years later I'm fine.

Chrysanthemum5 · 15/12/2023 23:58

I had this recently was going through 8 pads a day and flooding so was exhausted. Two week pathway as well and all was fine - the consultant was a very experienced older woman who said sometimes your hormones have a last hurrah and not to worry

I did get medication to stop the bleeding as I was losing so much blood I could hardly function

Hope it is also ok for you

More likely to be changes with your cyst, they can burst/bleed o would think. Try not to panic.

Chrysanthemum5 thanks for your message. Out of interest i wonder what meds they gave you? I am so glad I have the test day this week. I just want to know what i'm dealing with - hopefully not the Big C but if so as soon as possible to treat. I'm supposed to be getting married this year.............!

thanks - it's hard not to worry

Pushkinini, i'm so glad you are ok. It is this endo cancer i'm worried about. I am type 2 (good control) but type 2 doubles your risk for endometrial cancer.

I have Lynch Syndrome which raises the risk of certain types of cancer including womb and ovarian. Endometrial cancer is very treatable if caught early, so even if it is that, it's got a very good prognosis. Try not to worry, easier said than done I know. It could also be something totally benign.

JinglingSpringbells · 16/12/2023 18:36

@DoodlesMam It's most likely you are not post menopause.
As you say, you were on a hormonal drug and although that's stopped now, it's not a given that you were post menopause.

It won't be a burst cyst. Ovarian cysts if they are 'simple' are fluid filled. The can just disappear (mine did but took 2 years to go.)
If cysts burst or twist they are agony, so you'd know about it.

I really wouldn't go imagining the worst.
At 52 it's really a lot more likely that this is a period.

JinglingSpringbells · 16/12/2023 18:37

sorry- you're 54 now.

Traxenamic acid stopped the bleeding in a day - when I finished the course of tablets the bleeding came back but much lighter and only for a few days

Hope it is all ok for you

They're are other types of cysts which bleed and aren't agony, I know as that's exactly what happened to me.

I had exactly this. I was seen under the 2 week system. The consultant saw a polyp and said he thought it was that and he could remove it then and there. He said it would bleed due to the removal for a few days but after that if that, was the cause it would stop -job done. I agreed to the removal, it was a bit sore but perfectly manageable. He said if I was still bleeding in 7 days he would see me again and ramp up the tests etc. luckily by day 4 all was good. Last year I had a smear test and she could see where the polyp had been which surprised me for some reason.

DoodlesMam · 24/12/2023 23:38

Ahwig thanks for the message and yes hoping it's a polyp. I had the exam and consult this week and the clinician said after the ultrasound that she thought it was most likely to be a polyp. As my cyst (is stable) and I am post menopause a polyp or endometrial problems are the most likely. She won't do the exam or dilate my cervix without a general anasthetic as It would be too painful for me as i have never had children or been pregnant. My cervix was painful during the exam. She'd rather i had more HRT when its all resolved.

Menopause - bit of a mare!

follow up. had a hysteroscopy in hospital under a spinal anasthetic. It was a bit of a strange day but they had a look and saw no polyps. So its a wait for the cancer test or instead a diagnosis of atropy and soem extra HRT. Fingers crossed.
