Ugh. Menopause just keeps on giving, doesn't it?

I've been taking HRT for two years now but my hair continues to fall out. My joints ache and my nails are always jagged and rough.
Thought I'd try collagen and decided on Ancient & Brave.
Got my first jar today. Peed off that it didn't include a measuring scoop then saw they sell them for £12 so off to Amazon and bought one for £3.
Has anyone been on this for a while and noticed any improvement?

I have the same issue. I’ve been taking this for about 6 weeks. Ive also been taking Biotin for about 11 weeks. I have got about an inch of new hair growth, but it’s all white 😱 my joints are better but I do still get DOMS after exercise.

funbags3 · 08/12/2023 14:26

@Offredismysister Thank you. My hair is mostly white now. I don't mind that it's more the loss that is affecting me.

I take dose and co as a caramel flavoured coffee creamer. I am on my 4th month and I can honestly say it has made such a difference.
My nails and hair are so much healthier, my skin looks more glowy and it helps with joint stiffness (not as much as HRT though).I chose this one as it has type 1&2 collagen and it was recommended by a dermatologist.

Offredismysister · 08/12/2023 14:48

Might you be deficient in something? Have you had bloods done?

I had mine done & all normal. So have concluded it’s hormones. I’ve been on hrt a year but only found a regime that suits me 3 months ago.

funbags3 · 08/12/2023 14:51

@Offredismysister My bloods came back fine apart from my cholesterol which was slightly elevated. I'm taking plant sterols for that.

I think that’s the frustrating thing, when you can’t pinpoint it. Have you considered minoxidil?

liverpoolgal82 · 08/12/2023 14:55

Did they check your thyroid with the bloods. They were all my symptoms of under active thyroid. I’m on Levothyroxine now and my nails are long and strong again, hair doesn’t fall out and my joints no longer ache. The mornings were the worst going downstairs - my knees would be so sore. Can you see your results online to see the thyroid results if they tested for that one that is?

Offredismysister · 08/12/2023 15:03

Not hijacking the thread but I wondered the same about my thyroid.
Dr only did TSH which was 3.7 miu/l and I’ve read they should do FT3 & 4 & thyroid antibodies? @liverpoolgal82 did you have those tests?

funbags3 · 08/12/2023 15:25

I've not had my thyroid checked. I shall ask to have it done. Thank you.

Yes I had those tests too. My was way off. Feel back to myself again. I thought it part of menopause so didn’t do anything but my go wanted a full blood count of everything before she’d put me on hrt and she said she couldn’t believe I was functioning. I’m back within normal levels now but takes a bit of tweeting to get med dose exact so was having blood tests every six weeks for a bit.

Plantur 39 shampoo worked for me. I was losing hair and it's made a huge difference. It's supposed to block the effects of testosterone which (supposedly) increases post meno. Not so sure about that but the shampoo worked. It takes a while but I've now got a lot of new hair around my hairline that had fallen. You shampoo as normal and leave it for 2 mins. There is also a tonic that you can apply in between shampoos.

liverpoolgal82 · 08/12/2023 17:03

My other symptoms were constipation, weight gain and fatigue. I was getting into bed at six with a book with exhaustion. I’m 52 now, ( this was in 2021 ) but I felt 72.

@Allthecatseverywhereallatonce I've been looking at dose&co but can't see any info on how many doses a tub contains? Can you shed any light? The fact the dairy free creamer description states it contains dairy doesn't fill me with much confidence

Allthecatseverywhereallatonce · 02/04/2024 10:35

They are dairy free as well as a dairy creamer. It works out at 17 doses if you use a 20g serving. I tend to just use 2 desert spoons and find it lasts up to a month.
Best place to buy is Holland and Barrett as they often have 3 for 2 and 20% off online.
I spent ages looking for a collagen that was good and not too expensive.
I saw this one recommended as it has type 1 & 3 collagen which means it is one of the better brands.

Definitelynotwhiye · 02/04/2024 10:38

Surely it's a good thing that it doesn't include yet more superfluous plastic? Not hard to use a metal spoon to measure it out? I use Ancient and Brave, no idea if it's made any difference but it's fairly palatable. It's insurance for me I guess, just hope it's helping!

Thanks for the reply, I realise it's an old thread! Still not sure whether it actually works or not and if it's worthwhile! One of the "clinical studies" for one brand I looked at (can't remember which one) had a sample size of 18 people! Very scientific Confused

I agree surely it’s quite easy to use a teaspoon! It says 5g or 10g per day so that’s one or two teaspoons.

Allthecatseverywhereallatonce · 04/04/2024 08:23

Not sure where in my post I moaned about not having a scoop. I completely agree that any reduction in single plastic is a great thing! And as I said I just used a tablespoon to measure!

Apologies my mistake I assumed it was me as I explained how I measured it. Teach me to read properly 🙄
