can one start HRT at 56?

I had my last period around 5 years ago.

I have aged a lot, finding it hard to sleep and am wound up/irritated.

I am starting to feel vaginal burning.

I took HRT for a few years and stopped as I worried about the dementia link.

Is it too late?

Does anyone have any advise?

You have bags of time.
HRT can be started at any age although after 60 it has to be transdermal, not tablets. My consultant has had women in their late 80s start it.

For heart protection you need to start within 10 years of your last period.
After that, the damage to the arteries from loss of estrogen is irreversible.

Just started last week am 56 and last period was 8 years ago. So far, it's great!

Yep - I've just started on transdermal HRT. I'm 55 and even after a short period feel so much better.

I've got some significant issues it should help with but I've been surprised at the small things. I had no idea that my dry mouth and feeling thirsty all the time was menopause related. It's fantastic how much better I feel.

As others say you can absolutely start it. You should try Ovestin internal oestrogen cream alongside full HRT to help with the vaginal issues.

For vaginal burning you need vaginal oestrogen, unfortunately HRT on it's own won't do it. And you need it forever.

OK - off to the doctor!

Thank you all.
