Advice re doseage

Doggymummar · 07/12/2023 20:22

I saw a private doctor in December last year re HRT and she prescribed 50 Evorel patches twice a week and 1 Utrogeston pessary twice a week and the tablets you take for the first 14 days of the month as well. She said I would have stopped my periods by this December and could stop.

I can't afford to see her again as circumstances have changed and it's too expensive. Phone call is £150.00! My periods are still monthly. Anyone know what I should do? With regards to doseage.

Do you mean oestrogen pessary? For dryness? Are ther tablets progesterone? You’re periods will still be monthly because when you stop Taking the progesterone it creates a withdrawal bleed. How are you feeling?, are you feeling better have your symptoms improved? X

Sorry I was tired last night

Vagirux twice a week and Utrogeston 100mg x 2 for the first 14 days of month along with the Evorel 50.

Yes the symptoms have improved but my periods haven't stopped they are still every 28 days and the doctor said they would have stopped by now. Im 55 if that makes any difference.

You will always have a 'period' when you use utrogestan as it causes a withdrawal bleed.

As long as you have a uterus and continue with oestrogen, you need to take the progesterone and always have a monthly bleed.

You could get a mirena coil which should stop your periods, but it doesn’t mean you are through the menopause.

Christine0708 · 08/12/2023 16:48

@Moredarkchocolateplease that is not right. You won’t always have a bleed with utrogestan.@Doggymummar is taking it cyclical as you do when you are peri. Taking it for 12-14days a month causes the bleed. Taking 100ml daily is the continuous method for post menopausal and you do not bleed then.
@Doggymummar sounds like you may need to changes over to taking your utrogestan continuously otherwise taking it as you are now will always cause a bleed. I’d go to the GP and ask them to change the prescription.

She said I would have stopped my periods by this December and could stop.

How does she know that?

How old are you?

By age 54 , 80% of women are post menopause. The other 20% carry on to 55/56.

But I'm curious how she could predict your periods would stop.

You can't swap to daily Utrogestan unless your own periods have stopped for 12 months at least or you are over 54. If you change too soon you are likely to get odd bleeds (your own period coming through.)

There's a lot of info on this on Menopause Matters website under HRT and the types for peri and post meno, explained by a consultant.

I'm 55 thanks I'll find the site you mention. I can't have a coil as I haven't been pregnant and they fit can't one, and I don't need contraception haven't used any for over 20 years.

I don’t think not having been pregnant is a reason not to have a coil. From what I have just googled, there may be a slightly higher risk of expulsion, but pain or difficulties inserting it have been found to be the same for all women.
I have no need of contraception but still have a Mirena.
