Severe itching

For coming up to 2 months, I've had extremely itchy skin. Due to some other symptoms, I've been thinking that this could be caused by perimenopause. I'm 43, my mum went through menopause at 47.

The itching is mainly around the face, ears, neck, chest and groin area but now moving to underarms also. The scratching is causing quite obvious bruising

It's constant and really getting me down. I've tried all sorts of creams and have now got stronger antihistamines from the doctor and am waiting blood test results

Just looking to hear from anyone who has been through the same as it's really impacting my life at the minute.

Bumping for you OP.

I get this intermittently.

Bumping for you as there is a treatment for this but unhelpfully I can't remember what it's called. Will post back if I can find it.

Thank you, at this stage I'm willing to try anything. Antihistamines are helping to take the edge off but it's really bad in the morning and at night.

Low oestrogen does this. Topped mine up and went away.

Thank you. I don't really know too much about this to be honest. Is it a pill that you take? Is it easy to get prescribed? Is it an ongoing medication? I have a Dr appointment on weds for the blood results. Sorry for all the questions, really appreciate your response.

When you see the gp say you think you could be menopausal. At your age they might want to do bloods rather then just start HRT. Oestrogen is one component of HRT and usually delivered in patches or a gel.

MafsisNafsbutcompelling · 04/11/2023 09:58

You are young enough for the combined pill, which has ways more oestrogen that HRT, or hrt if your doc says you have risk factors which mean you should not take the cocp (or you don’t need it)
Or course other things cause itching, serious things but these are all best chatted to with your doc

I went to a lovely private gp in the end

Thanks everyone. Ideally I wouldn't want to go on the pill, I was on it a very long time and my husband had a vasectomy after our second child so I wouldn't have to go on it. But if it will help, I'll have to consider it.

Had a bit of a meltdown this morning, but feeling a bit better now. Thanks for the responses.

Itching was one of my first symptoms aged 43. I rode it out for over a year with antihistamines & natural supplements, then started hrt at 44. I started on a 50mg evorel patch & utrogestan. The itching went immediately. Unfortunately it’s come back after a year so I’m taking antihistamines again & have changed to an mirena coil & 75mg patch to see if that helps. All my liver bloods have always been fine, I’ve never had my hormones checked.

Itching drove me mad. I'm on HRT now and it's under control but I do find that using this Aveeno body lotion helps: www.aveeno.co.uk/products/dermexa-daily-emollient-cream

Thank you, I have been using Aveeno oil so will try this
