Can sex 'bring on' a period when they've gone completely haywire?

I'll say before I start that I will be going back to the GP about this, I'm not just going to leave it regardless of the responses here. So, I've been having some bleeding after sex for a while now, not every time but fairly frequently. Saw GP a few months ago, had some tests (although probably not thorough enough to put my mind fully at rest) and was diagnosed with a small cervical ectropian which GP deemed the likely cause of the bleeding. But a few times since then it's been as though sex has brought on a proper (heavy, full of clots) period and I wondered if anyone else had experienced the same?

I'm 49 and my periods are already completely haywire, have been for a few years now. I had about 18 months of them being horrendously heavy/clotty and prolonged (I bled for 8 weeks straight at its worst) but they've seemed to be slowing down/tailing off for about the last year, much lighter now usually and less regular, can be a couple of months between. On two random occasions now I've had no bleeding immediately after sex but a day later a massively heavy period will start. No idea if period was due as there's no such thing for me these days, they turn up when they feel like it and both of these post-sex periods have seemed heavier than is 'usual' (whatever that is!) for me lately.

Not looking for medical advice, just anecdotal evidence (or not) that this could just be yet another weird peri thing so I know how much to worry whilst waiting for my GP appointment really! No other worrying symptoms, no weight loss, urinary changes, unusual tiredness etc but am still obviously concerned about possibilities other than floopy peri hormones. I did have a smear amongst the tests a few months ago but was HPV negative so I assume they didn't actually look at the slide 🙄

Just bumping for you.
Im interested in the replies as I’ve started bleeding after a bit of DIY the other day 😳

Are you taking hrt?

Devilsmommy · 28/10/2023 08:01

Are you on contraceptive pill? When I was I was constantly bleeding and when it stopped, if I had sex it would start again. I think it's to do with massive oestrogen spike. GP definitely your best bet

No, in a word.

I know you said you didn't want medical advice and just experiences, but how can they be separated?

It's most likely sheer coincidence.

Obviously spotting or slight bleeding after sex, not like a period , should be investigated, but you've already mentioned the ectropion and this is the most common reason.

I would say yes, period blood builds up, but you may not have enough of the rekease hormone to dudpel the blood. If you have rigourous sex and your partner ejaculates in you, combined with other lubricants, it can cause a discharge of the build up blood.

This makes total sense, I didn't actually realise there was a 'release hormone' but just been reading up and it would explain a lot! My last few periods before this one have been really light and short, like they never really got going and I had about a week a couple of months ago where it felt like I was going to come on, like my body was really trying to, but nothing happened. And then I have the odd horrendously heavy one that gets rid of everything that's built up, all of which fits exactly with how I'm feeling. Have booked a GP appointment anyway but at least I won't be worrying myself sick in the meantime now I have a possible explanation, thank you x

@CreationNat1on Sorry but that is really not the case.
Periods start when the level of progesterone falls. It builds up from ovulation and gradually declines in the 2nd half of a cycle. The endometrium changes from a proliferative phase (growing) to a secretory phase (waiting for a fertilized egg.)

What may happen is that if you are about to have a period anyway, the uterine contractions during orgasm can sometimes bring forward a period that was due to start that day or very soon.

Exactly, there is no release hormone.

I used to find that sex did exactly what you’re describing- kick started the period and got rid of that blocked-up heavy feeling.
