Heavy bleeding, very large blood clots and fainting

Hello
I'm just wanting to hear from people who have or are going through something similar as this week has been the most scariest ever for me.

I've been under the gp for a year and referred to the hospital menopause clinic. I only went 2 weeks ago for a biopsy. I've had numerous blood tests, swabs, smears, etc to rule
Stuff out. Now it's just down to the menopause.
My bleeding had been on and off for a while, mainly spotting here and there then stopping for ages etc . However this week I started bleeding really heavily and passing very large blood clots everytime I feel a gush of blood. I've fainted twice in the night and resulted in a&e visit yesterday. Been prescribed mini pill, northisterone and iron tablets.

I only started them yesterday so still feel pretty rubbish and weak.

Has anyone else gone through this? Consultant at the hospital didn't seem worried.

Can't go on HRT btw as I have the clotting gene.

Has anyone mentioned a mirena coil ?

Sortmylifeout52 · 27/10/2023 10:52

Fibroids? They can cause hideous bleeding.

andjustlikethisorthat · 27/10/2023 11:13

Yes I have the option of the coil, I'm happy to do whatever so long as it stops this hideous bleeding

I have 2 small fibroids apparently. Do they cause clots? That's what's most alarming having them drop out of me without warning. Just hideous.

I'm younger than you but had horrendous bleeding due to fibroids. Tried pill, coil etc. In the end I had an endometrial ablation and it was life changing. Haven't bled at all since. Worth mentioning to the GP.
You have my sympathy x

DustyLee123 · 27/10/2023 15:28

My gynaecologist said to try the coil first, then ablation if still bleeding.

RallyRallyAppreciateIt · 27/10/2023 15:32

Heavy bleeding, clots, anaemia - it was awful.
I also had fibroids.
The coil made me bleed every single day and the actual periods were still Harvey and full of clots.
I spent 5 years under gynae trying the coil, tranexamic acid, mefanemic acid, this pill and that. Nothing worked.
I refused ablation because it can grow back and there was no way I wanted to risk that, not with the trouble I’d had.
I begged for a hysterectomy in the end. Took over a year to get one after they agreed. Life changing.

Can I ask what it was like? I believe they do it without any painkillers in clinic. Sounds awful. The sample I had taken at hysteroscopy was bad enough.

bobby81 · 27/10/2023 19:36

@DustyLee123 I had it done under general anaesthetic in hospital, I don't think there's any way it could be done with no pain relief! I was allowed home the same day. It was a bit sore for a couple of days but not too bad. A bit of light spotting/watery discharge (sorry TMI) for a few days. I'm so glad I had it done & tell lots of people about it (hopefully not in a weird way haha!) because I don't think enough people realise that it's an option. We shouldn't have to put up with heavy bleeding, it's awful.

GCAcademic · 27/10/2023 19:39

I had this (including fainting and hospital admissions) due to fibroids. Ended up having a hysterectomy. The sheer relief of no longer having a uterus is indescribable.

andjustlikethisorthat · 27/10/2023 20:46

It's a relief to hear it's not just me, it's not something I was ever aware of and I've been frightened so much especially with the fainting. That's so scary. The passing of huge bloody clots has been hideous.
Good knows how long I'll be in these tablets and will
It just start again when I come off them? Everytime I see someone at the hospital they discharge me but I don't understand why as I'm clearly not sorted.

I would go back to the GP if I was you OP. I know it's disgusting but I even took photos of blood clots to prove how bad it was. It took a few years & I had to try all other options first but finally they agreed I needed an ablation. Keep going x

Taylorscat · 27/10/2023 21:12

Have you had a d&c with the biopsy? I bled like this for SIX WEEKS! I’d soak a tampon and pad in an hour. It ended with the most agonising pain and I passed out. I had to have a biopsy and he did a scrape and since then I’ve had about 3 extremely light periods in 2 years. Highly recommend!

Taylorscat · 27/10/2023 21:13

I had to stop using tampons as there was no point as I could feel the clots just sliding past them .

it was so awful. It did stop and I’m fine now - can’t wait for them to be gone forever

WhereAreWeNow · 29/10/2023 08:34

I had this (but not A&E). The Mirena coil has sorted the problem for me. It pretty much stopped my periods altogether.

LeonBlack · 29/10/2023 09:05

This was me a few months ago. Clots the size of my hand, hideously anaemic.

The mirena coil has changed my life.

andjustlikethisorthat · 29/10/2023 20:51

I'm pretty scared of what's going to happen after I stop the northisterone, I can't risk fainting as I have my little boy to look after.

Will go see about the coil as I think it's a better option than remembering to take the pill everyday
