Oestrogel + Utrogestan: when do you apply Oestrogel?

Hi, I’ve just started on Oestrogel daily & Utrogestan at night for 14 days from CD15-29.

I noticed in the Utrogestan info leaflet it says to have both Oestrogel and Utrogestan at the same time, and Utrogestan needs to be at night.

I’ve been putting the Oestrogel on in the morning - should I switch to doing it in the evening?

Also a bit confused about my prescription - it says two tablets a day from CD15 for 14 days, leaflet says to take for 12 days. What difference will it make doing one or the other?

thanks!

I do my gel in the morning and the utrogestan at night (it apparently makes you drowsy). That was my doctor's advice. I'm on daily gel and 14 days on, 14coff with utrogestan.

It makes zero difference.

<sigh>- sorry!

I just wish GPs knew this better and explained it all.

The dose is 12 days.
14 days is an option to help control heavier withdrawal bleeds (more utrogestan should equal less blood loss.)

The dose can also be 12 days per calendar month (so 12 days out of 30 days.)

It's easier to start your 12 days each month on the same day .eg 1st or whatever date you choose every month.

I do one pump am, one pump pm
I start the tablets on the same day of the month and take it for 12 days each time

Can I ask, what dose is usual? As my GP has prescribed it one a day for 25 days, off for 5, but I keep seeing this 12 or 14 day thing...starting to think it's been mixed up with contraception pills :(

I had heavy periods so the GP advised me to take 14 days on/off Utrogestan.

So I take my oestrogel in the evening (two pumps - one on each arm) then two Utrogestan when i am on the 14 days.

The UG has really helped my periods - not sure if the oestrogel has made any difference as i am still shattered

I don't know if this is necessarily wrong - I ended up moving from two utrogestan for 14 nights to one for 25 out of 28 as I was getting lots of side effects on the other dose. So it is a known approach even if you have been given a slightly different number of days.

@Kleptronic are you past menopause. The way you have been prescribed is continuous HRT when you have not a had a period for 12months or longer. You usually take a 100mg tablet every night though without a break.

Kleptronic · 22/10/2023 12:01

Oh thanks guys some variation there. No I'm still peri.

Pigeonqueen · 22/10/2023 12:02

Makes no difference when you do the gel. I do it in the morning after my shower.

HundredMilesAnHour · 22/10/2023 12:05

I take 12 days of Utrogestan (from the 10th of each month), 30 mins before I go to bed. I apply my gel at night when I'm getting ready for bed - so apply gel, wash face, clean teeth, moisturise etc and by the time I'm finished in the bathroom, the gel is dry.

Cranarc · 22/10/2023 16:58

If using only one pump of gel I would use it in the evening. Since I use two I put one on in the morning and one in the evening.
