Stopping cerazette - perimenopause - what to expect?

Hello everyone,

At my recent GP appointment, he suggested coming off Cerazette to see what my cycle would be like or indeed if I have a cycle, I'm 51 and apart from the very occasional period in the last 2 years, have had no periods since I went on it 10 years ago.

Has anyone come off it at this stage of life to see what their cycle was like?

I'm not suffering too badly with peri symptoms, nothing I can't manage at present.

He suggested coming off it for the next 6 months and then come back for HRT if necessary.

What can I expect, I presume it will induce a period. Will I get low mood/put on weight (really can't afford any more), maybe even lose weight (wishful thinking).

I'd really appreciate if anyone has been through this and might be able to let me know what I'm in for.

Plus I'll need contraception, so I suppose condoms is the best bet, deffo don't want menopause twins!!

Thanks in advance xx

A mirena coil could be a consideration as it’s contraception and the progesterone part of HRT.

Last time I went for a pill check ( I’m 48 ) I asked how long I could stay on ( I’m on the same pill as u ). She told me I could stay on till I’m 55. I went on the pill years ago to help with the bleeding. And after hearing people on here talk about how bad their periods have got I’m uninclined to come off it.

my plan is to stay on as long as I can.

Standard advice without any other medical implications is that you can stay on it until 55 . Personally I couldn’t be persuaded to change it prior to then if it’s working well for you . If you have peri menopause symptoms then HRT can be prescribed alongside it . My GP also ran blood tests which aren’t a great indicator , but can show if you are definitely menopausal rather than still peri, and as such if you need contraception still .

I came off it at 51 and never had a period again. I'm now 54.

Thanks to everyone who replied.
@Wishimaywishimight Did you go on HRT or manage to get through yourself.
I am curious to see where I’m at I know from blood’s oestrogen is low. That’s all I know because the cerazette is masking it.

@schiedel I'm not on HRT. Apart from a recent diagnosis of Osteoporosis and a rise in anxiety in the last couple of years (which ai largely attribute to 2 very clise beteavements) I have not had any significant symptoms. Recent bloods showed borderline cholesterol but otherwise fine.

I have a great GP with a real interest in menopause so happy to discuss HRT if needed but for now I don't feel any need for it.

You don’t need to come off the mini pill if you want to start HRT. I am 43 now and went into menopause aged 37 due to medical reasons and I’ve always been on the mini pill and didn’t want to stop it (I like never having periods) so the menopause specialist (I’ve seen two - one nhs and one Newson health) both said I could stay on it and introduce oestrogel and take one utrogestan 100mg every night - as the mini pill already provides part of the progesterone component (utrogestan provides a top up to this).
