Hello, I'm due to start this next week but I am progesterone intolerant as in it makes me feel very depressed. I'm switching from the patches as I'm hoping this method will help my symptoms. i'm going to be using the oestrogen gel.

Can anyone please answer this question. ? Asking in desperation as I've asked it before with no reply and I'm really quite worried about the effect it's going to have on me -
can I just take the 100mg for 12 to 14 days during the month. Or does it have to be 200? I haven't had a period for over five years, but I was on the sequel patch.

Thank you so much I'm getting very confused !

My understanding is that it's 100 every day if post menopausal versus 200 for 12-14 days in peri - cyclical

But I did read something yesterday (can't remember where) that you don't actually need to switch away from cyclical if it works for you... worth asking gp or whoever prescribed what they recommend for you.

JinglingSpringbells · 10/10/2023 09:17

@doyouwanticewiththat The dose is either....

  1. 200mgs x 12 days per month (start on the same day each month.)
  2. 100mgs x every day

If you were on sequi patches you may want to carry on with sequi Utrogestan or you could try the daily dose as you are well past menopause.

Hi thanks am grateful for your replies. The nurse at surgery is usually really knowledgable about HRT but seemed quite rushed for time and a bit vague .

I'll try the 200 over 12-14 days and see how I get on .
I had wondered about the need to swap from cyclical range if it suits me , I'm glad to hear I don't have to .

Right thanks for previous advice , I've started on it vaginally , but the leaflet says take half the dose of the oral dose , which is 100 mg for 14 days...does that sound correct ?
I'm even more confused than I was before ..but I'm having mild side effects only so think PV is best for me probably .

I've just switched to oestrogen gel from patches and am on 100mg Utrogestan continuous (no period in 4 years).
My Dr has, instead of increasing the dose, halved it by transitioning. I only found out through mumsnet.
I read somewhere that 100mg is not enough protection for anything other than the lowest oestrogen dose. Anyone else? I wouldn't like to say it's ok if Dr has made another error

QueenOfHiraeth · 11/11/2023 23:15

@doyouwanticewiththat I have read contradictory reports about the vaginal dose. Louise Newson and her team recommend 100mg but the British Menopause Society says 200mg.

@Raptorvelo The Australian and NZ advice has recently changed to say Utrogestan is not potent enough for any oestrogen dose above 50 patch or equivalent but UK guidance remains the same as previously

BlondieLady · 12/11/2023 09:50

I have recently changed from 100mg to 200mg Utrogestan as started to get bleeding. On 2 pumps oestrogen. They are now saying 200mg is fine to take continuously.

Which leaflet?

This isn't the licensed dose.

If it's from your GP they may be following the advice of Dr L Newson who wrote the 'GP Guide'.

Her guidance has now been questioned by the BMS and they advise 200mgs vaginally or orally. If you search this site for BMS HRT progesterone dose/ guidance, you might find it- I've left the link numerous times.

My private consultant is more experienced and qualified than Dr N and he's never suggested a reduced dose for vaginal use, even though he advises women to use it that way.

The advice to use half the dose was based on one small study in Switzerland a few years ago. Because it was such a small study, it's now not considered enough to change the guidance (to half the dose.)

RubyRoseVioletLillyJasmine · 12/11/2023 16:54

My private menopause Dr has said I can start on a VERY low dose as I still have periods, therefore my body is still producing its own progesterone.

I've tried all sorts of products & am
also Progesterone intolerant.

If you don't have periods you could switch to one a day op. Or the coil is an even lower dose apparently.

Raptorvelo · 14/11/2023 20:59

Forgotten how to do all this stuff but thanks Queen for clarifying the source of that info on Utrogestan dosage insufficiency.

Raptorvelo · 14/11/2023 21:13

And Jingling obviously! Time to do the homework on past threads.
Sorry if it sounds like I've hijacked the thread😬

No , when I went to check, not the leaflet so I must have read it on Louise Newsons site . Thank you !

Thank you , I switched from the patches as I was feeling depressed with the northisterone in the patches . I definitely feel so much better on the gel and Utrogestan .
