Magnesium and a glass of water - sleep

I've just started taking Mg to hopefully aid my sleep.
It suggests taking with a glass of water.
The thing is, if I have a glass of water shortly before sleep I will probably wake even sooner than I already do in order to go to the loo.

Current sleep pattern is: 12.30am - 2.20am. Wake. Potter about. Read. Back to sleep fairly easily. Wake again around 4.30am. Get back off to sleep. Alarm 7.15am. Backup alarm 7.30am.

Sometimes I will only wake once.

I have been taking Nytol herbal and that did help a bit, but I think it no longer works. I did get the other one with diphenhydramine, but it made me feel lousy the next day (the few times I have taken Zopiclone to kick start my sleep it really worked well - 1/2 a tablet knocked me out for a night and I felt dopey the next day).

I am a night owl. Even if I feel tired during the day I pick right up in the evening. I am a lone parent and while DS is no trouble (mostly!) I absolutely crave the time when I am off duty and know no one will ask anything of me. Hence the late night.

I have just turned 53, haven't had a period since April (fingers crossed this continues) and really the only symptom is hot flushes which are manageable.
I get a lot of night sweats. I am not on HRT.

I exercise a lot and eat well.

I didn't ask a question, did I!
I guess I just want to share with other women going through the same and who might have some suggestions.

I use a magnesium spray at night. Might that be an option?

EsmeraldaMeitsme · 04/10/2023 11:10

make sure it’s Magnesium glycinate for sleep.

Oh! The pharmacist in Boots sold me straight Mg. Looking on their website they don't even sell Mg Glycinate.
Sigh.
Thank you.

What you have from Boots won't be elemental magnesium, it'll be magnesium something. Some forms are quite indigestible and useless and others are better for different uses. Personally, I like Better You magnesium lotion, which seems to work better for me than magnesium oil and doesn’t feel unpleasant on my skin. I use 1 teaspoon of lotion per night.

Insomnia can be helped by HRT.

Would you consider it? That was my main reason for starting it, and hourly flushes.

It's magnesium oxide
"Ingredients: Magnesium Oxide, Cellulose, Colour (Calcium Carbonate), Magnesium Stearate [and other tablet stuff like talc]"

I have research to do it seems!

I haven't ruled HRT out, but while I am managing my symptoms I'd rather not start taking it.

I got Magnesium glycinate from Amazon. And I just take it with a sip of water, not a whole glass.

inkworks273 · 04/10/2023 15:41

Make sure you're hydrated throughout the day and then just take it with a sip of water.

I take this one and it definitely helps me sleep although it gives quite me vivid dreams!

Have you tried black cohosh? It worked wonders for me! It eradicated nearly all symptoms for me.

Honestly, this stuff has been a total life saver for me - surgical menopause has really messed around with my sleep and I am sleeping much longer and deeper than I have previously

To clarify sleeping much better due to the body butter, not menopause 🤣

Nutri brand do Magnesium Glycinate can buy it directly from them or Amazon sell it.

SmallTreeDeepRoots · 04/10/2023 23:21

Better you magnesium body butter works well for me. I apply it on feet before bed - apparently better absorbed through skin than consumption.

CharlotteBog · 05/10/2023 09:33

Thank you all. It's so helpful to read what's helping real people going through the same.
I hadn't even considered topical application; that appeals to me more.

I've never been one for supplements (apart from iron and vitamin D), so this is all new to me.
