I know peri & menopause can play havoc with your digestion, and you start to not be able to tolerate certain food, but is there a tipping point of ‘not normal’?

After another evening of crippling indigestion and 4 rennies eaten in 1 go, I’m reflecting on what I now can’t eat / find v difficult to digest. Tonight was chicken tandoori and cauliflower aloo - never had an issue but now I’ve got more gas than a soda stream! I’ve also found thoughts of certain food elicit a ‘nope’ reaction when i think of them (I’ve never had any issues with food / ED etc) namely

  • apples with skins on (indigestion)
  • peppers with skins on, and green peppers generally (indigestion)
  • tomatoes make me feel weird, and some tomato sauce / passata I find way too acid
  • cauliflower, celeriac and broccoli 80% of the time gives me gas
  • plain yoghurt and sometimes egg make me feel weird (altho tbf i used to have dairy and egg allergy as a kid so i think thats psychosomatic)
  • big mushrooms make me want to heave (small ones weirdly are ok)
  • spicy food - love it, but it’s starting to hate me
  • citrus fruits (prob unsurprisingly) are also gas giving

And there’s a few more. I suspect a trend with nightshade and root veg but can’t pin it down. I try and eat a lot of veg and this is massively impacting that! i’m basically down to courgettes, types of peas and beans and carrots (i’ve never been able to tolerate lentils so stay away from them and go easy on pulses) and fruit is berries

I had allergy and intolerance testing done this year and it didn’t mention any of the above (i’m not sure i fully buy into whether it works anyway) I’ve also done two stints on low carb which did help a bit, but i don’t love the high dairy / meat content to keep protein up

Is this all inevitable with peri?!

Hmm. I was told by my GP it was because I'm overweight (I am, fair enough) and while she could prescribe opremazole, it's harmful to take it long term and weight loss would be the only real fix.

I took the tablets for a month and had no heartburn, but they ran out, I haven't lost weight, and I'm back to not being able to eat bread, pastry or chocolate. Obviously I'm sure losing weight would help, but it started when I was pregnant and never went away so I suspect a physical reason as well.

Update on this, in case anyone is having similar symptoms. I’ve had recurring worsening indigestion after everything I eat, and mentioned it in passing at at Drs apt for a non related issue.

Turns out I’ve got a h-pylori infection and beginnings of a stomach ulcer, so now on various medications to try and fix it.

I had no clue about this, and assumed they’d fob me off with ‘middle age / overweight’ etc etc.

Definitely worth checking out if you’re experiencing something similar!
