Oestrogen cream

Has anyone used this?
I've recently started testosterone and have happily noticed a big jump in my libido! Had more sex in the last 3 weeks that the last year.....
Anyway, my fanjo feels a bit 'burny' now. Just uncomfortable and slightly itchy Blush. Not thrush tho.
I'm not sure it's because of my now rampant sex life Grin and a reaction to that or the menopause.
What symptoms have people had that made them start the cream and more importantly, did it help?

I use Ovestin cream internally and externally alongside full HRT and it’s made a huge difference in terms of bladder issues for me (I have interstitial cystitis and recurrent UTIs) and I find I just feel more comfortable. Hasn’t made any difference to me sex wise, no interest in that whatsoever but suspect that’s more to do with my other health issues (I’m 42 and have been on HRT since 37 due to early menopause). Ovestin is better than Vagifem for dryness and burning etc as you can literally apply the cream directly as well as internally.

pearldiamond · 20/09/2023 17:24

Good to know you can use it alongside full HRT. My oestrogen levels are 'perfect' (whatever that means!) according to my memo specialist so I kind of thought I might not need it.
I've actually just read another thread about it and see you can buy 'Gina' otc
Anyone had success with this?

Just seen that you can only buy this if you've not had a period for a year or more. That's not me unfortunately Envy😑

You can definitely use Ovestin if you’re still having periods (I do) - it may be just with buying Gina online that they say that. The oestrogen level in these creams is extremely low - I think I read somewhere that you’d have to use them two/three times a week for a year to equate to one dose of an HRT patch… but it’s really made a difference to me.

AnnaMagnani · 20/09/2023 18:31

Have been using Ovestin for outside and Immvaggis for inside since starting HRT. the doctor was clear that despite HRT most women need topical as well and that has totally been my experience.

TheShinmeister · 21/09/2023 09:53

Ovestin cream for burning, stinging and constant need to wee has been a miracle x

stayflufft · 21/09/2023 10:00

Not close to menopause yet but I’ve just started using omega 7 with sea buckthorn oil supplements for dry eye as they increase moisture in mucous membranes - including the vagina. Could be worth trying out? The reviews on Holland & Barrett are really good.

I had to stop HRT a few years back and out of nowhere I got three doses of UTIs back to back and vulva felt almost bruised and aching. Started using Ovestin and it's worked wonders.

It’s fab isn’t it. I had all the aching, stinging and burning. It was debilitating. I was more or less housebound. Now my life is so different x

I think a trip to the GP is in order! Smile

@stayflufft The problem with the kind of stuff you are recommending is that they don't change the tissues. Estrogen creams actually reverse atrophy at a cellular level, rather than just adding wetness on the surface.

All women can use topical estrogen right into old age, so it's a no brainer really.

BingBongDingDong · 22/09/2023 08:46

OP I was in the same boat as you. Testosterone gave me back my libido and DH and I started having sex again after years-long drought. However my vagina was just that bit too dry to be comfortable and I developed soreness and itching/burning feeling.

I was already using ovestin twice a week so I talked to my menopause specialist and she put me back onto the loading dose (every day for 2 weeks), then reduced to 4-5 times a week. I now use ovestin around 2-3 times a week (I also use Yes moisturiser once or twice a week). If we're having a lot of sex, I up my dose of ovestin to 3-4 times a week. This has dealt with all my soreness/burning issues.

I read the book My Menopausal Vagina - and it's horrifying what vaginal atrophy can lead to. The poor woman who wrote it can't even stand knickers touching her vulva, and sometimes can't even sit down, it's that bad. Please don't use supplements or herbal remedies. You need localised oestrogen, as Jinglingspringbells says.

JinglingSpringbells · 22/09/2023 09:54

I agree 100% with @BingBongDingDong

Sadly, many women are embarrassed to discuss this with a dr and many also don't understand what causes it.

The 'alternative remedy' manufacturers play into this embarrassment, and also sometimes the belief that estrogen is 'dangerous.'

Once you get over the issue (if it IS one for you) of discussing the state of your vagina with a dr, it becomes no different to discussing any other bit of your body.

I suppose it is easier if you are talking to a gynaecologist as they must say 'vagina' a hundred times a day but in any case even if it's a GP (and male) - just go for it!

The last paragraph is close to where i am! Came onto MN to see what others were suffering & found this. Will be making an appointment asap. I have the mirina coil & been using oestrogen gel for about 6 weeks. Thought I was having an easy menopause until this year.

Thanks for these latest replies.

Can I just ask, vagifem and sex!?!

Is it messy? Does it melt? Can you put it in after sex? Mix with sperm!?!

Thanks! Blush

Why's it changed your life? What symptoms did you have that you don't have now? Thanks

StunnedCrab · 03/12/2024 07:13

Hi all - read this thread with such interest. If anyone still monitoring this thread. I have a tingly urethra and constantly feel like I need a wee after a UTI about month ago. Thinking of asking GP if I can try estrogen cream - I am only 40, do you think they will let me?
