Should I have a hysterectomy

All my adult life I had been using the pill and had regular periods during the 7 day break when I was 47 my periods became irregular and heavy. Saw gp and got referred for a scan and that showed I had a few small fibroids. I was given the coil and this did help with the bleeding. All was ok for a couple years and then the bleeding started again had another scan and the coil had moved so had another one put in. The first couple years the bleeding was again irregular so was put on the waiting list to have a hysterectomy. Now the past 12 months I haven't had any bleeding at all and I’ve now got a date for the operation. I done a lot of reading and even though I asked the gynaecologist if it could be menopause he said I was too young. Im now 52 and just think all my symptoms are classic peri so I’m unsure whether I actually need this operation.

I def wouldn't have the operation!

Tryingtryingandtrying · 14/09/2023 09:02

And how can 52 be too young??

Gcsunnyside23 · 14/09/2023 09:09

There's no way they said you're too young for menopause or to be perimenopausal as must I know are in their 40s. Alfi why are you getting a hysterectomy for a fibroid causing issue? I have the same and it's never been suggested. Do you have other symptoms you haven't mentioned apart from irregular bleeding?

When I first saw the gynaecologist I was 47 and I asked if it could be menopause and he just said ‘oh you’re a few years away from that yet”. I didn’t question it as I hadn’t read much about it. I have 3 fibroids that are between 2.5cm - 3.5cm. I’ve just been told this is what’s causing the heavy bleeding. And it was heavy with big clots and flooding ended up anaemic with it. Apart from the bleeding I have no other symptoms. The coil has helped but now I’ve had no bleeding for just over a year. Over the past year I’ve read up and seen lots of online articles about peri and this was me. I don’t want to have this op if not necessary

When did he say that? Now when you are 52 or years ago?

Your post isn't very clear.

The average age of meno is 51.

Women do not normally have hysterectomies for fibroids these says unless they are huge and causing uncontrollable bleeding which is usually sorted with the Mirena coil.

You sound as if you don't need this operation, so just refuse it.

JinglingSpringbells · 14/09/2023 09:30

x-posts.

They are small fibroids. They don't usually need a hysterectomy.

Just refuse the op.

If you don’t want it, don’t have it.

Paintedtoenail · 14/09/2023 09:33

I’ve just had a partial hysterectomy. Mine was due to risk of cancer and what scans had shown.

I don’t think you need one for fibroids .

Stumpy54321 · 14/09/2023 09:34

This was 5 years ago. I was 47 at the time I’m now 52. Yeah again I’ve read up about ladies having hysterectomy because of fibroids but they are big in comparison to mine. I also been told as with some gps who dismiss meno symptoms a gynaecologist isn’t a meno specialist
