Are these hot flushes???

I'm 51 and perimenopausal. My periods are still fairly regular but getting longer/shorter.

Over the past two weeks I have started having what I think may be hot flushes. They are not very intense - I get warm but don't end up very sweaty. The thing I am curious about is the frequency. At the moment they happen multiple times a day. Is this normal? They come mainly during the day rather than at night.

But I can have times of rushing around during the day so I'm not sure whether that - and the current warmer temperatures - are to blame.

Very confused. So any insights would be welcome. Thank you.

Mine were quick and hot but not sweaty, just before I started HRT i was getting them every 10 minutes in the evening. I felt very cold in between. I didn't expect them to be so unpleasant so it took me by surprise.

Summerhillsquare · 12/09/2023 18:29

They do vary a lot. Mine were at breakfast time only 😅 but I was sweating all night continuously too.

Henchilada · 12/09/2023 18:38

Mine are throughout the day and night. They are worse in hot weather, and can be triggered by caffeine. I notice them more during the day but when they are really bad they also wake me up at night.

OK so they can be triggered by food/drinks, it seems @Henchilada - I will try and see if that's the case with me too. Today I've only had two so far, which is less than I had in the past week.

Does HRT help with hot flushes? And does it tend to make you put on weight? I'm currently on a CICO-based diet...

I can't take HRT (breast cancer) but do take gabapentin which keeps my flushes under control so they aren’t disruptive and also reduces the insomnia. The only thing it doesn’t help with is osteoporosis risk, for which i do weight bearing exercise and take vit D. BUT the point is there are things you can do/take which improve things a lot. Don't suffer, seek help.

Nutterjacks · 12/09/2023 19:06

I started the same as you describe OP - only during the day.
Never got sweaty either. It was winter at the time so quite welcomed them.
After hearing other people's stories was expecting a lot worse. So as PP said, it affects everyone differently.

Yes, HRT most definitely helps with the symptoms. As time went on, I started to get other symptoms too, like insomnia, aches and pains, brain fog etc. Once established on HRT, the flushes completely disappeared and I felt tons better overall.

I can only describe mine as feeling like I have an element inside me that is heating me up from within, regardless of what the ambient temperature is. I'm 51 and had a few random hot flushes over the last year or so, but since July I have been having several a day and loads throughout the night. If I can quickly throw off the duvet and any clothing, I don't get sweaty, but if I'm in a public place then yes, I do sweat.
I had period in July after a couple of years of either skipping a period here and there, or periods coming every three weeks. Nothing since, and the brain fog and hot flushes noticeably worse, so I'm sort of hoping this at least might be it...

smokingcarriageonly · 12/09/2023 21:15

The hot flushes stopped immediately when I went on HRT, even at a low dose. Just about everything else took ages to resolve but flushes were easily fixed.

YapYap2023 · 13/09/2023 00:14

I had one, what I now realise was, hot flush right before I started hrt. It was triggered by wine (I was in a bar).

My face got really hot, my eyes got hot and a bit watery, my cheeks went red, and it was very unpleasant. Iirc my mouth went dry and the rest of me got warm.

Thank fuck I only ever had one.

I've made an appointment to see my GP about this. I absolutely don't want to put up with this for any longer than absolutely necessary

Good for you, good luck. Keep in mind that there's a shortage and ask the GP if they can prescribe something you're likely to be able to get.
I was always a cold person and hot flushes didn't sound terrible but I hated them.
