The first few months of Mirena - more progesterone released?

I had a coil fitted about 5 weeks ago, as I was finding Utrogestan hard to tolerate. My gp said it takes about 3 months for the coil to settle down and that it releases more progesterone in the first few months. Does anyone know anything about it? I don’t feel that great with it, a bit on edge, and not sleeping well.

I found no side effects from mine, I just reduced my rages.
It might not be the coil causing it, it might be what you’d get from peri anyway. Have you tried magnesium glycinate for sleep ?

If you were finding Utrogestan difficult, and struggling now, it sounds highly likely you're progesterone intolerant. I tried 3 times with the Mirena, but within a few weeks every time I struggled badly with almost inexplicable symptoms. The third time I was literally kneeling and crying, begging my GP to remove it there and then.

Lots of doctors seem to say it releases so little progesterone it can't affect you like that, but if it didn't have an effect on you physically then there would be no need for it to be in there!!

Look up Mirena and progesterone intolerance and it may shed some light on things.

Good luck. 💐

I am with your GP op.

I had mine fitted at the end of June this year. For a full month afterwards I had the kind of exhaustion I couldn't explain. It was like I'd been drugged. And I woke up with a headache every morning (lots of water no alcohol).

I'm nearly 3 months in and I feel so much better. No headaches, exhaustion fog has lifted and along with the testosterone I feel brilliant.

So yes I think that it does release more at the beginning.

It definitely releases more during the first few weeks. After I had mine fitted, I felt sick, hot and emotional. That settled after 3 months or so.

Mine never settled. Everyone I spoke to friends, professionals raved about it.
It wasn't for me. I had it removed after a year. Listen to your body. I feel like a different person now.

  • I don't mean literally settled, to be specific I mean it led to side effects that I never had prior.

Thanks for all the responses. It’s encouraged me to keep going and give it a proper trial. I think I’d be fine if I could sleep better.

Mine took a while to settle but side effects were way less than with utrogestan so I kept with it. Absolutely fine now.
