Would testosterone help?

I'm struggling through the menopause and have constant anxiety. I've changed HRT a couple of times and it's helped a bit with sleep but not the anxiety. It feels like I'm not enjoying my life as I'm always worried. I've heard/read that testosterone can help with this but I don't think it's available on the NHS. Does anyone know how I could go about getting it prescribed privately? Also anyone on it who can tell me if it's helped with anxiety? Thanks in advance.

Hoping this isn't one of those threads that no-one replies to!

The NHS will only prescribe testosterone for low libido and even then it's off licence. I've found it helps with my low libido, mood and anxiety but was told by consultant it's not available for anything other than libido..

I had it prescribed by the gynae at the hospital and now my surgery prescribes it.

Not for anxiety though - it was for low libido.

The right HRT helped with my anxiety. I'm now on oestrogel and a MIrena(which is why I saw the gynae as my surgery doesn't put them in for non - contraceptive reasons).

maybe you need the HRT adjusting? it too a while to find the right one in my experience.

Thank you both for your responses - very helpful and much appreciated.

I'm on it and it's great.

I'd just fib/exaggerate re libido to get it.

The nice guidelines will catch up eventually!

I was prescribed testosterone on the NHS after going to the doctor with numerous HRT symptoms (whilst already on patches and Utrogestan) including low libido.

It has had a really positive effect on my mood and reduced my menopausal rages, which I think may have been heightened by anxiety about everything, no end. I do find this strange as you imagine testosterone to induce rage as is does in men but it seems to have just balanced my hormones to make me feel a bit more normal.

It was necessary to have a blood test before starting and after 3 months to check your actual testosterone levels.

Thanks very much to everyone who has replied - it's so helpful to know it's helped other people and that I can get it on the NHS.

You can get it prescribed privately if you use an online health clinic, if you have an unsympathetic GP. Pricey of course, but at least you will get the women's formula (Androfeme). I used 'The Online Clinic', the prescription incl consultation cost £120 (3 month supply), and they advised my GP about it. I had to submit medical questionnaire (I'm on HRT) BP and weight info. It was very quick.(But we shouldn't f-ing have to do this.) Better luck with your GP!

Thank you - it's so good to hear this - I just wish I'd asked on here about it sooner. All of your replies have been very helpful and given me the confidence to ask for it. My libido has reduced dramatically too over the last couple of years so this will be an added benefit!

Hi @Menomeltdown ,

I came on to ask about anxiety on HRT and saw your thread. My libido went through the floor a few years ago.

Started on patches (50) in January and have ticked up to (100). My job is really stressful and relentless but the constant anxiety is rubbish.

Have cut back on alcohol but not cut out. Have upped my exercise to doing something everyday, but not any strength training etc which I'd like to.

Your thread has helped. I was going to ask about testosterone at my next appointment to try to help my marriage.

🙈

@mellongoose sorry to hear you're having a tough time too. Hopefully it will help both of us with our anxiety/libido if we can get it. Fingers crossed for you - this time of life is so tough x

I got prescribed it for low energy levels. I didn’t mention libido.
