Basic stupid questions about Menopause

I realised the other day that there are some fundamentals I don’t understand about the Menopause.

I’m 56 and haven’t had a period for about 4 years. I had a bit of sweating but no regular hot flushes. I’m woolly headed sometimes and emotional but no more than normal.

My first question is: would I get any benefits by doing HRT now? I’m thinking of minimising osteoporosis mainly.

And secondly: would I get periods again - or does the fact that they’ve now stopped mean my ovaries have gone into retirement and nothing’s going to wake them up.

And finally: what else can I do to preserve my bones.

I am type 2 diabetic, overweight with high blood pressure (that came on after giving birth to my last child when I wasn’t overweight apart from pregnancy- related gains). I feel as if I just ignored the menopause amongst all the symptoms of my other issues and now feel I’ve been rather neglectful.

I know there are some brilliant websites out there (I visited in the past) but if I could just get these initial answers it would be really helpful.

TIA

Plenty of women start at 56. I’m not a doctor, but…

They might fuss about the weight and BP but a strong point to make is that HRT can improve energy levels and hence inclination to exercise. Also, modern transdermal oestrogen isn’t risky with BP in the same way older forms were. The stroke risk isn’t as high.

The same points about exercise hold for BP too. If HRT encourages better sleep because you’re not as hot at night, you will be more inclined to get up and want to go for a walk/jog/do an exercise class.

Hopefully you’ll get some informed medical advice now too!

You may get bleeding. It won't be ovary produced bleeding. It's called breakthrough bleeding and it is caused by the oestrogen causing the lining to thicken and then shed. Once you are on the correct dose of progesterone it stabilised although it can take a while. I had breakthrough monthly bleeds then irregular spotting for over 2 years. I'm just about to increase my oestrogen so I may have spitting again whilst thing settle. It's worth it
