Perspectives and experiences with Mirena Coil

Hi, due to severe perimenopause symptoms I have been taking HRT for several months. It's been helping a lot but recently the doctor needed to increase the dose due to a return of the symptoms. At first this was Evorel 75 patches and Cerelle tablets, and today I had the Mirena coil fitted to replace the Cerelle. So now I'm taking Evorel 75 continuously and have the MC. The nurses and doctors I have spoken to have all said nothing but wonderful things about the coil, saying it's what they all choose and a "wonder". I'm just at home reading the leaflet given to me on my way out, and it lists some common side effects including weight gain, depression, increased facial hair, inflammation, and acne among lots of other lovely things! I want to feel better but I wonder what your experiences are with this hrt/ combination.

I found the mirena lessened my rages. I had it due to more frequent heavy periods that made me anaemic, and I wish I’d had it years ago.

violetcuriosity · 30/08/2023 21:35

I had in put in mid June I've been spotting about 75% of the time since, hoping it stops soon. Nurse said give it 6 months.

Yes my rages have improved recently, I still get angry but think it's actually years of not acknowledging what I should have!

WhereAreWeNow · 30/08/2023 23:07

It's been good for me. No weight gain or acne. I have been suffering with depression recently but I have had depression prior to the Mirena too so I don't think it's caused by the coil. I know some women don't get on with the coil but for me it's been fantastic.

surlycurly · 30/08/2023 23:13

I've had one for about fourteen years (not the same one, obviously). I get no periods, and limited symptoms (sore boobs a few days a month). I am much calmer and believe it's probably the reason I haven't killed someone to date.

Goldrill · 30/08/2023 23:15

I have had mirena since my 20s, but now on the same evorel/mirena combination as you. It was the evorel which helped me be less permanently irritated I think. Oestrogen being the warm and caring hormone and all that!
I have had nothing but positive experience with the several mirenas I've had all the way through, and 20+ years of no periods was pretty excellent!

Moredarkchocolateplease · 31/08/2023 11:31

I had one put in at the end of June.

I'm less drepressed than I was so it's thumbs up from me.

However I have had serious fatigue since it went in and I struggle to exercise as much. Hoping it will wear off.

Am still bleeding hut happy to put up with bleeding forever if it means I'm not suicidal like I was on the utrogestan.

Moonshine5 · 01/09/2023 07:52

It did not suit me.(not used for menopause)
I tried for a year. Like you OP everyone told me they loved it, friends and professionals.
Feel so happy it's gone.

It was closer to 7 months when mine stopped, by then I was on the list to have it removed due to spotting. But glad I persisted now.

MightySprout · 01/09/2023 07:57

I've had mine in since end of June. I've just stopped having a light period/spotting every day so fingers crossed I'm finished bleeding.

I feel a bit better but tbh I also upped my evorel to 100 at the same time so it's probably that. I have put on 6 pounds but that's probably due to eating like a pig on holiday 😆😳

MightySprout · 01/09/2023 07:58

I do miss feeling drowsy when taking the utrogestan at night. My sleep has definitely gotten worse since having the mirena.

MagpiePi · 01/09/2023 08:01

I started on HRT with oral utrogestan but changed to a mirena after a couple of months as I didn’t want to bother with pretend periods and having to remember to take the pills. I had continuous bleeding/spotting for more than 6 months, which was annoying, but no problems since it stopped.
I still occasionally get minor PMT symptoms but these are more feeling a bit tired and irritated and eating every carb I can lay my hands for maybe one day, but this is a huge improvement on 3 days of weeping and contemplating suicide.
I don’t know if the coil is better or worse than the pills as it was so soon after starting HRT, but not having periods is fantastic IMO. One of the benefits of menopause!

Jewel1968 · 01/09/2023 08:06

@Windblownwife can I ask why doc suggested coil over tablets. Is it considered more effective way to administer progesterone? And are the potential side effects of coil different to those associated with tablets.

I am on oestrogen gel and two progesterone tablets but have experienced post menopausal bleeding. Has thorough exam at hospital so doc not worried and suggested coil for the bleeding. More effective than tablets. I haven't had it done yet as suffering with bout of arthritis and didn't want to add to discomfort but also not totally confident that there are advantages to coil.

UsernameNotAvailableNow · 01/09/2023 08:08

I love mine and wouldn’t be without it. Mild spotting for a few months. Much less faff.

DustyLee123 · 01/09/2023 08:08

I had a recent bleed on the coil, it had moved. And the gynae consultant told me that the best way to control uterine bleeding is a Mirena coil in the uterus.
I believe that it’s a much lower dose too.

Switcher · 01/09/2023 08:11

I'm not yet at menopause but fully planning on getting the Mirena replaced and adding the oestrogen when I do. For now I love it, no periods in 6 years now. The initial fee weeks were a bit bumpy emotionally but other than that no side effects.

cheezncrackers · 01/09/2023 08:11

My experience has been that it can take a while to settle down and make your life easier. I too had spotting with my first one for several months, which was annoying, but I didn't experience weight gain or any of the other things. It didn't stop me having periods, unfortunately! Apparently for about a third of women it does, but it has made them very light, which given that my DM suffered with flooding during her menopause I'm grateful for. I'm on my second one now and together with Oestrogel I have found a lot of relief from the annoying symptoms I was experiencing.

Abra1t · 01/09/2023 08:14

I had no issues with my mirena.

Peekingovertheparapet · 01/09/2023 08:15

I have had a mirena in now since 2016 (not the same one). Not for menopause, but not there yet.

the first six months with this mirena I did experience some acne which seems to have settled down (but I have problem skin generally). I’m heavier since having kids, so hard to tell re:weight gain. I have quite low libido which I think is the mirena. I can’t recall how the first was as I was 6 months postpartum and breastfeeding so my body was very different at that point.

my mirena was exchanged under GA because the old one was inaccessible (believe me, that’s a whole other thread). The consultant I saw (who is an expert in endo) was extolling the virtues of mirena for menopause relief. He seemed to think it really helped his patients.

The side effects on the leaflet are the side effects of progesterones generally, so I think with the mirena as it’s a lower and more localised dose these are less likely than on systemic medications, but I’m not an expert.

cheezncrackers · 01/09/2023 08:16

I still had red mist rages with Mirena on its own - it was adding oestrogen that made me feel human again and saved the lives of the three males I live with Grin

Rollinghill · 01/09/2023 08:17

Very happy with mine, periods have stopped, mood swings definitely improved. A few spots but that's far better than abdominal cramps of period pain!

Soontobe60 · 01/09/2023 08:18

The thing is, some of the side effects listed are things that other women who are perimenopausal / menopausal get anyway. I certainly could have ticked off most of that list.
Once I had the mirena fitted, within about 4 months I felt so so much better generally. My skin cleared up, periods stopped, energy levels rose, libido returned.
I have gained weight - about 2 stone in 5 years - but it’s stabilised now. I am less active than I was due to a knee injury but I enjoy my food! I just need to eat less to lose excess weight 😂

Windblownwife · 01/09/2023 08:22

Jewel1968 Hi, I understand that the progestogen dose is much, much lower when using the M coil to when using tablets, and have learned in the last day that it is completely localised so the majority of the body remains unimpacted, and so less affected by potential side affects.
It's only been a couple of days since mine was put in, but the cramping definitely feels better already. I had a local anaesthetic and barely felt it go in at all! I do feel incredibly tired! Can barely get going! Is this normal?!
