Unable to take Oestrogel after period, but fine to take after ovulation?

Hi there,

I have no idea why this happens to me. But basically a day or two after my period if I try to take oestrogel I get an immense hit of anxiety which drops off once the oestrogel has run its course a few hours later. However if I take it after ovulation I can take it normally and feel brilliant.

I wish I could take it all the time, as I feel crap after my period until ovulation. Low mood, tiredness etc. This is 100% caused by the oestrogel.

Any idea why this is the case? I take ultrogestan all the time (no break through bleeding) and j have regularish periods. I'm about to be 48.

Many thanks 😊

Is there a reason why you are using Utrogestan daily?

Daily (continuous combined) is for women who are post menopause or have very few periods (months between them.)

Taking it daily is a no-bleed type. So the fact you ae having regular periods means it's not doing its job (it's supposed to stop the lining getting thick enough to bleed.) https://www.menopausematters.co.uk/postmeno.php

How much gel do you use?
If it's 2 pumps that might be too much for you, or too little.

I had huge problems sleeping as my progesterone levels were so low, so my doctor said despite having regular periods to take it everyday. And it's been brilliant, no problems or break through bleeding. So they want me to continue taking it.

It's the oestrogel which is the problem. Even if I take half a pump after my period it's too much. But after ovulation I can take well over one pump. It's so odd, I don't know if it's to do with my hormone levels straight after my period.

To be really honest, I'm not sure your dr is right although I won't disagree if this is a menopause specialist. If this is a GP, I think they have their wires crossed.

The sleep issue is usually lack of estrogen. It's the reason I've used HRT for 15 years. When I had a break, the insomnia came back.

We don't have progesterone at all, post menopause, when many women still use HRT, and it's only produced after ovulation.

Yes, Utrogestan can be sedative, but the usual way to improve sleep is to increase estrogen.

Are you willing to try it because what you're doing now is a bit 'back to front' and it's not working for you, is it?
