Post menopausal bleeding again

This time last year I had a bleed 18 months after my last period, got referred under the two week pathway and had an ultrasound, all clear and they sent me on my way. The bleeding I had then was exactly like how my periods used to be and followed the same pattern so I wasn’t too worried. Today 12 months and 1 day later I have had a brown discharge, a bit like the end of a period, for 10 days prior to this bleed I had experienced a heavier than normal white discharge but that settled down until today when the discharge is brown. Obviously I will see the doctor and know I will go on the two week pathway again but I’m so upset and worried, I’m 55, anyone else gone through this?

Should have said I’m not on HRT.

I'm in the same boat. Investigated a few years ago after a 'period'. Got the all clear. But it keeps on happening.

Ihatebeingpostmenopausal · 21/08/2023 18:24

It’s so frustrating and worrying at the same time, I know I have to go through all the tests again, hoping it will be nothing. I hope you get the all clear @MsRosley it is shit being post menopausal, supposed to be the time of freedom from periods but just replaced with cancer worries instead.

I've had about six bleeds, but with most of them I've had hormonal symptoms like sore breasts/migraine so I took the decision it was unlikely to be cancer and didn't go back for another investigation. But this latest one is a bit out of the blue and I promised the nurse who did my smear that I'd get checked out if it happened again.

I'm going to talk to the consultant at the post meno bleeding clinic about getting a hysterectomy, cos I have other medical issues that make uterine biopsy tricky.

Amireallyhere · 22/08/2023 15:58

I have the same problem. I'm 55 and on hrt. I had an ultrasound and hysteroscopy 6 months ago due to irregular bleeding and they said I had a thickened endometrium. I've had my ultragestan increased but it has started again. I had another ultrasound yesterday and have been referred to have another hysteroscopy next week. I'm very worried. I hope you both get the all clear.

Ihatebeingpostmenopausal · 22/08/2023 19:11

It’s such a worry for us all, if you have had so much investigation already within the last 6 months hopefully if there is any issue it will be picked up very early @Amireallyhere maybe it’s an HRT issue rather than anything sinister? Really hope you get some positive news.

I'm in a similar situation. 52, been on HRT for 2 years and the mini pill for years. GP said I was post menopausal due to blood tests taken prior to going on HRT. Had a 3 week light bleed a few weeks ago, referred for an ultrasound but unfortunately they couldn't read the thickness of my endometrium. Been over a week & despite chasing I'm still waiting for a doctor to get back to me on next steps. My surgery are hopeless - I only got the scan in the 2 weeks as I chased it, the GP hadn't flagged it as 2 week pathway.

Ihatebeingpostmenopausal · 23/08/2023 15:18

Feel for you @Neversaygoodbye my surgery is hopeless as well, I can only get a telephone appointment in 3 weeks, so much for the urgent 2 week pathway, it will probably be weeks before I get a referral. I hope you get some answers soon.

Thanks @Ihatebeingpostmenopausal still nothing from the GP. I need to chase it again but having had A level results last week and GCSE results tomorrow I just don't have the energy or headspace right now, Hopefully I will find some time on Friday.

Update, GP phoned today & referred to gynaecology on 2 week pathway. I suspect this will involve another scan, hopefully they'll be able to measure something this time.

Same for me, appt week after next. Good luck with yours!

@MsRosley all the best with yours.

So thought I was just going for another ultrasound & had a hysteroscopy sprung on me! Luckily it wasn't too painful. Consultant said everything looked ok & put the bleeding down to HRT which she said I could continue. Took biopsies and should get results in a few weeks but hopefully will all be fine. How did you get in @MsRosley

Ha ha, pretty much the same! Had the ultrasound and then a hysteroscopy, which actually worked this time (I have a lot of cervical scarring from previous LLETZ for dysplasia, so the last attempt four years ago didn't work and I had to have a general anaesthetic). Anyway, all looked okay, though endometrium is a bit too thick, which consultant alsoput down to HRT, which he then tried to persuade me to come off. I said I'd think about it, but I the hot flushes waking me at night were causing chronic insomnia, and no way was I going back to that as I couldn't function. I suggested a hysterectomy instead, but he wasn't convinced was appropriate, though the only reason he could give was recovery time. He's left it with me to think over, said I could have the hysterectomy if I insisted, but it would be better to come off the HRT. I thought, easy for you to say, mate, but didn't actually say it 😀

Neversaygoodbye · 07/09/2023 19:38

@MsRosley glad it went ok and well done for standing your ground. I had awful night sweats where I would soak through everything and the HRT has helped massively although I'm topping up with sage leaf supplements which I think also helps. I can understand why they might suggest coming off the HRT as opposed to a major operation but the symptoms can be so debilitating it's just not so straightforward.

Naphtali · 17/11/2023 21:57

This sounds exactly like my symptoms ive never been on hrt and now have a bleed after 18 months with no period i went to my doctor today who tried to take a smear but couldn’t due to me bleeding so is sending me for an ultrasound im so worried im not eating properly but its so reassuring to hear your experiences too xx
