Starting HRT

Went to see GP on Friday, having been meaning to go for ages, as have a range of symptoms which could be peri. Tired, anxious, permanently feeling on edge, memory appalling and lack of concentration (forgot to mention hair loss and achy joints). I did acknowledge that they could also be attributable to other things (not least life!) but asked it could be peri and if worth trying HRT.

I've just turned 50.

As my periods are still regular as clockwork and I have no hot flushes/night sweats, she has advised that HRT is unlikely to make much difference. She is willing to prescribe it but suggested blood tests first to check iron and thyroid (more than happy with this as I think this may be an issue) and an ECG and then a phone appointment to follow up in 2 months' time when she will prescribe patches. She's given me the name of it in the meantime if I want to look into it (don't have it to hand).

I had understood that HRT could help with this and wondered if anyone else has experience of use where they have no 'traditional' symptoms. Happy to overhaul diet and exercise in the meantime, but two months feels a way off, although if the blood tests help, that's something (it still amazes me that the NHS over 40s check doesn't check iron levels).

Any insights gratefully received!

I went to the GP last week for the same reason. They did bloods and they came back as low in vit B12 and Vit D. They cause all sorts of side effects, very much like the menopause.

Im waiting for more test and I still don’t know if I need HRT too. Have they suggested blood tests?

Sorry, missed a whole paragraph…… I’m so tired lol

Thanks @Tulipvase, that's helpful to know. I was aware of the impact of iron deficiency but not that similar symptoms
could be caused by other deficiencies, so that looks like a good place to start (I was pleased she suggested it).

Hope that your symptoms are improving, it's not fun, is it!
