Does menopause age run in families?

I'm really really hoping it doesn't. I'm 58 now and still have a strong cycle, I changed to a continuous regime and had breakthrough bleeding so i'm back to sequential with a bleed every month. I really thought i was finished with all this, but my mum had regular bleed until she was 60.

I think it does, my Grandmother was sixty and my Mum and Aunt were both late fifties.
I'm 52 and still very regular, so I imagine I've got quite a bit longer to wait.

FutureMandosWife · 08/08/2023 20:57

Our family have a history of going early. The doctor has mentioned menopause to me 3 times already. Wish it would just happen hahaha.

SarahSaysYes · 08/08/2023 20:58

I think it does but you won’t necessarily get that genetic influence from your mother. It could be from your father’s side or great-grandmothers etc. So there is hope!

BumbleNova · 08/08/2023 21:04

Yes definitely! I'm the other end of the spectrum, I'm only 38...

HollyRocks · 08/08/2023 21:14

@SarahSaysYes Or a faint chance i might have been adopted!!
@BumbleNova Thirty eight? ThirtyFuckingEight!!! 😮 I've been bleeding now for way more years than you've even been alive. You're soooooo lucky!

I was really hoping you'd all come along to say no. I often see people in their 40's posting about perimenopause and irregular periods and i try not to feel sorry for myself, but it just seems so unfair.

I think so. My mums mum was 50, my mum was 50 and I'm 45 and peri menopausal. My mum was peri at exactly the same age as me with the same symptoms.

ladygindiva · 08/08/2023 21:16

Sorry, it appears to in my experience. Mum and I both early 40s.

Dartmoorcheffy · 08/08/2023 21:18

Yes, my mum was early 40s and had a really quick easy time and luckily I've been exactly the same. All over and done with by 45.

User1755387908 · 08/08/2023 21:29

My mum was around 60 and I was early 40s so not in my case

FMSucks · 08/08/2023 21:34

My mum was 48, periods just stopped. I’m 49 in October and still getting regular periods much to my annoyance!

BusinessClass · 08/08/2023 21:35

yes the females on my
mums side all early 40s

BackT · 08/08/2023 22:19

My mum was very early and I'm nearly 50 and showing no signs.

HollyRocks · 08/08/2023 22:40

Feeling sorry for all the other later-meno ladies, (and wallowing in self pity) thought there must be some good points so i googled and I came across this -

Late menopause can have several health benefits. These include
Reduced risk of osteoporosis
Reduced risk of heart disease
Higher levels of estrogen for more years, which can help delay the

onset of these conditions
Longer lifespan

Feeling better now. Not happy, still wishing it was done with, but better.

Going to 58 or 60 is VERY unusual. Yes, it runs in families to an extent. Normal ages are 45-55. Average is 51. 45 is now considered earlyish in terms of bone health.

IF the bleeding is worrying you, get it checked out. Or any odd bleeding after more than a 12 month gap.

JinglingSpringbells · 09/08/2023 08:19

Just one more thought @HollyRocks continuous HRT can cause bleeding for up to 6 months until it settles down. If you didn't give it any longer, then you won't know if the breakthrough bleeding was going to stop.

And obviously, on sequential you won't know at all until you stop it.

blobby10 · 09/08/2023 08:50

My mum was 51, her mum was about the same age and neither had massive problems with symptoms. No idea about my paternal grandmother as they didn't talk about 'things like that'! Grin. I'm 54 and still regular but SO light now - I'm really hoping they will just stop. Apart from brain fog and occasional joint pain I'm not getting many symptoms that I could attribute just to peri - most are down to too much sugar in my diet

Augustus40 · 09/08/2023 08:59

My mum was 56 when hers stopped and so was I. Boy was I glad to see the back of them!

Coastalcreeksider · 09/08/2023 08:59

My mum was in her 40s I think but I was 50 and it got worse at 53. I don't know about grandmother on mum's side.

My friend's mum was in her 30s but friend doesn't really appear to have had much of one at all, a few hot flushes in her 50s, she's now 69. Lucky cow!😀

HollyRocks · 11/08/2023 22:17

Thanks you @JinglingSpringbells GP advised going conti (because of my age) to see if i had reached meno yet, but as i was still having breakthrough bleed after 6 months, which settled straight away when back to sequi, she said i must still be having a natural cycle.

Not really worried about the bleeding, just fed up with it all and feeling sorry for myself!

My mum was early amd the age I am now. She just stopped. I'm had a few missed periods this year so I'm hoping....

I really wouldn’t be jealous if people who go through menopause early as the health outcomes are significantly worse so it seems in poor taste. And mothers menopause age is the biggest indicator for a woman’s likely menopause so definitely runs in families! Frustrating as it is you’re near the end and just be grateful for the long term health benefits.

Exactly this. Early menopause is shit. It's not just about having to not pay sanitary protection. Maybe have a read up about how it effects every aspect of your life!

My Mum was 58, I was 51. We both had periods regular as clockwork, they then just stopped. Mum died very peacefully at the age of 92 in December last year so I’m hoping I take after her like that!

JaninaDuszejko · 11/08/2023 22:36

Mum was 55, but I'm 52 and still have regular periods, I've missed one and that was over a year ago. DSis reckons she's already seeing signs and is only 43, at that age I had a 2 year old and was still wondering about having another with no signs of the menopause at all. We started our periods at different ages as well.
