Allergic to HRT??

dreamonlucid · 23/07/2023 19:38

Could anyone talk to me with similar experiences? I've tried oestrogen and had a massive panic attack huge histamine reaction according to medical people so started taking anti histamine for a few months and stopped the gel immediately.

They have no suggested body identical progesterone for 6 weeks, and then intro the oestrogen in tiny doses.

Which I was on board with but now I've started the progesterone only week 1 I'm having hot flashes and night sweats, heart palpitations and anxiety, I feel simply awful again.

My usual without HRT symptoms are low mood, lack of libido, heart palpitations, itchy everywhere!

So I thought it was worth a try but it seems every direction I turn it's making symptoms worse or just switching one symptom for another.

The hot flashes and night sweats are disgusting and god help anyone who's suffered this.

What would you do in my situation, is is a case of just suffering and trying to work through the HRT or give it up?? And just go naturally into submission?

I run a business, have a busy teenager household I can't afford to spend time doing nothing or relaxing, I need to just be getting on.

Is anyone the same as me and cant tolerate the HRT?

I really want this for the long term benefits

You've got a little typo here so it's hard to be sure what is going on.

Is it NOT suggested body ..... [so you are not using any for 6 weeks]

or *NOW suggested body... [so you are using Utrogestan only now and only that for 6 weeks.]

If you are using only Utrogestan for 6 weeks and no estrogen it's not surprising you feel terrible. Progesterone (even our own) raises body temperature and can cause all the symptoms you're getting.

What dose are you on?
What is the 'logic' behind this regime?
Are you being treated by a menopause gynaecologist who is registered with the British Menopause Society ( and should know what to do!)

@JinglingSpringbells sorry yes that meant to say "they have now" suggested just the progesterone only for 6. - 8 weeks.

I'm with Louise Newson clinic and a week in just sat here burning up again, I'm having about 6-7 hot flushes a day and the last 2 nights night sweats.

The logic was to see if I could tolerate the progesterone for a while as I had such a strong reaction to the oestrogen gel.

I spent years of my life on the combined pill with zero issues so I'm thinking maybe the synthetic balanced hormones may be better suited?

Or just drop the ideal of any HRT all together and ride out the natural symptoms.

There is a combined pill that is prescribed for menopause sometimes, so perhaps you could see if you can tolerate that.

Clinic said to me I'm oestrogen intolerant. Seems to include my own oestrogen though! I had raging pms and the only thing that worked for me was LARCs, against all the guidance 🤷

I don't think the current regime is doing you any favours!

Have you tried a very low dose of gel on its own?
That's what I started on - just a pea sized amount slwoly working up to 1 pump over 10 weeks, to get the dose right, then adding in progestogen.

Too many women go in on 2 pumps straight off and it's far too much.

Hello,

Yes even a tiny dab and I'd end up climbing the walls and heart palpitations, it's like an almost instant reaction.

I had high hopes for starting this way around and I'm so so glad i out my door down having the coil.

Can I ask what LARCs is?

Long acting reversible contraceptive.

KatzP · 23/07/2023 21:50

If you coped with the combined contraceptive pill it’s seems strange to have such a reaction to hrt.
could you try femeston? If you’re in the U.K. speak with your GP. There are other options than just the gel and could have been that very particular type that disagreed with you.

i was taking Everol patches and have just moved to Estradot. In theory the same drug but my understanding is one is derived from yams and the other soy. So could be as simple as a different gel or oestrogen would work.

dreamonlucid · 23/07/2023 22:06

Thank you so much for the tips.

I'm due to take the next pill this evening and I dithering, thinking I'm not really persevering with this but the symptoms seem so extreme that my body won't tolerate HRT somehow.

Having been on the pill for years it's very odd, I have had surgery for endometriosis and I know that's linked to high oestrogen and Ive apparently got high histamine levels as well.

So I'll keep trying and feedback to the drs.

My main reason for keeping trying is/ was for long term help and benefits like bone density and equally mood as I'm really low, and to control heavy painful bleeding.

But I'll take the bleeding and grumps over this random heating up, sweats and crippling panic feeling.

It is really odd that you react to body identical estrogen like this. Has the Newson dr said why? As a PP said, it could be that you are allergic to the ingredients- I think gel is made from yams- although there isn't going to be much of that left in the final product.

You could try any of the tablet forms- Femoston, Kliofem etc.
Or patches.

They did and suggested I read up on high histamine and that some women do have a histamine reaction and the racing heart and anxiety panic etc could all be linked to this. But interesting they didn't suggest a patch?

But now I'm reacting to the body identical progesterone only route as well and literally burning up 5/6 times an hour and unable to sleep for burning up, I'm hoping I can flush this out of my system quickly as I need to work.

I've stopped immediately as that's simply not a normal reaction to a hormone and will wait to chat with them, but just wondered is anyone else's journey to HRT a was so extreme.

My body seems to react the moment I take anything.
