Postmenopause utrogestan or mirena?

I have a hysteroscopy on Monday with option of having mirena fitted. Been using estrogel and utrogestan for a couple of years.
Feels like a big risk having mirena but I guess if it doesnt work out it can be removed.
Just wondered if there's general positivity about the mirena or best avoided?

Why do you feel it's a risk having the Mirena? I love mine 😁 absolutely totally in love with it. Helped my heavy periods and now it's the progesterone element of my HRT.

OldKingCole · 08/07/2023 00:33

Thinking of switching too to Mirena but I just keep hearing so many horror stories about weight gain!

IfOnlyOurEyesSawSouls · 08/07/2023 00:43

Mirena was awful for me.

It really affected my mood and caused weight gain.

Im a nurse and hear similar stories.

Its very much marmite.

greenspaces4peace · 08/07/2023 00:47

what would be the point of the coil?
you say post menopause so no periods at all (which is what post menopause is).
just the ease of not having to take topical/oral HRT.

RubyMurry22 · 08/07/2023 09:45

The mirena really worsened my severe dry eyes and I had to have it taken out.

Runaround50 · 08/07/2023 11:19

Mirena is like marmite unfortunately.
Has it been suggested you have one fitted?

Girlintheframe · 09/07/2023 09:00

A family member has one and absolutely loves it. It's the progesterone part of her hrt and loves how she doesn't have to keep taking tablets, she just has the coil and forgets about it.

Zubin60 · 09/07/2023 11:47

Yes, to use it as the progesterone element of HRT.
This is 2nd time in a year of needing to be checked out because of postmenopausal bleeding. All I can think is the progesterone - I use utrogestan 100 vaginally at night- isn't doing its job.
So I've heard mirena is more efficient, but as the previous posts have said it isn't for everyone. Because I have a lot of pelvic pain anyway I'm thinking I probably won't risk the mirena. I'm really 50/50 about it, have till tomorrow to decide!

Also haven't used Mumsnet much before but now realise there's a plethora of threads on this topic

You can always have the mirena removed if you don't get on with it.

Zubin60 · 09/07/2023 12:02

Is it not possible to remove yourself? I understand it has strings like a tampon.

OP posts:
MargotMoon · 09/07/2023 12:11

I wouldn't recommend trying to yank it out yourself - ouch!!

I've been waiting 8 months to have my mirena changed. It has disappeared up somewhere so can't get it changed by the GP, on the waiting list for a hospital appt. I've got on well with it though as I love not having periods and I've had no bad side effects.

Having said that, when I was on progesterone tablets I slept like a baby every night.

Ha! In theory yes, but in practice I found GPs very reluctant here and always trying to push me to give it more time.

In the end I had bled daily for over a year on it (increasingly heavily) and had to really insist on removal.

You aren't supposed to remove it yourself, as occasionally it can become embedded or get caught, although I can understand why some people do when driven to desperation. I was starting to consider it.

Zubin60 · 10/07/2023 18:54

Well I had the hysteroscopy today, and have decided to try the mirena 🤞🤞🤞

Hi OP, how are you getting on?
I'm having a hysteroscopy soon and wondering about the Mirena as I don't get on well with Utrogestan.
