Bleeding after 13 1/2 months

Just as the title says, no period for 13.5 months, last night fresh blood and stringy bloody mucus. Bit worried as have been having abdominal bloating and pain for two months. Thought IBS. Luckily have had the blood test recently for Ovarian Cancer which was normal. Feeling unusually anxious which was typical of my periods when I was still having them. Anyone else had this? Will contact Drs anyway. Thank you.

I've not had this, but I'm a GP and would definitely want to see a menopausal patient who had any bleeding >12 months after their last period. Most patients with this don't turn out to have any serious underlying cause, but occasionally it can be a symptom of an endometrial cancer so should always be investigated to be on the safe side.

@pbdr thank you for taking the time to reply

In case anyone is going through anything like this or has been, I've had a scan and my uterus is "bulky" and measuring 11mm which is the threshold for further investigation. Could be due to fibroids or adenomyosis but also uterine cancer has been mentioned Confused. Have a hysteroscopy booked for a months time for further investigation. Feeling a bit concerned but also dreading hysteroscopy as I find them very painful. Has anyone found gas and air has helped?

Sorry to hear you're going through stressful investigations. Hopefully it turns out to be nothing of concern, but even in the worst case scenario if it was a uterine cancer, this typically has a very good prognosis with most women being entirely cured. You've done yourself a huge favour by getting things checked out so quickly to ensure you catch anything untoward at the earliest possible stage.
I don't have any real advice with regards to the pain of the procedure, other than explain to them about your concerns before it starts. I've never had a hysteroscopy, but gas and air really helped my pain when I was in labour.

All the best.

Thank you @pbdr. I'm so glad you advised me to go to the GP. Have had no further bleeding, the one I had seemed just like the pattern of a normal period and the scan revealed polyps fibroids and adenomyosis, so there's a lot happening down there! No more Dr Google for me, it really doesn't help! Thanks again.

I'm waiting for an appointment for a scan just now. Had one 2 years ago before I started HRT as GP did bloods and said I was post-meno but I've been on POP for years and have always had a small bleed every few months so she wanted to check it out - everything was fine. Been on HRT+POP for 2 years and continued to have the odd bit of spotting but this last couple of weeks I've had a light period, bleeding every day so thought I'd better get it checked. I'm trying not to stress - unsuccessfully! Hopefully these appointments come through quickly.

@Neversaygoodbye. It's horrible where your mind can go, I'm trying to convince myself it's just a random last hurrah of a period. My biopsy is in 3 weeks even though I was put on the cancer two week pathway. The Drs strikes and post Covid backlog have extended waiting times. Good luck to you.

And goodluck with the biopsy @itstimeforme x

Just in case this might be of interest to anyone, I've had my hysteroscopy and everything was normal. Just my body having one last hurrah! Hysteroscopy was fine, I had a couple of Nurofen beforehand and although it was uncomfortable, it was totally bearable.

My Mum got pregnant with my younger sister after 19 months of no period and thought she was through the menopause. Just reminding you that can still happen. Could it have been an early miscarriage?

itstimeforme · 20/08/2023 14:51

@caringcarer Thanks, I will bear that in mind. What a shock!
