Regular heaving bleeding - is this normal

I'm so fed up and struggling to find answers.

Dr said I'm in the thick of the menopause, I'm 46.
My periods stopped for 6 months then started to come back but it was spotting/irregular bleeding for a Few weeks. Then stopped for a few months again and now have returned again. I had a heavy period for 5 days then 2 weeks later it's returned being heaving bleeding again.

Is this normal? Dr tested me with a smear, various blood tests etc and came back with nothing but I'm panicking thinking they've missed something as they said irregular bleeding isn't normal. I'm so confused

I haven't experienced that. Has the GP recommended any treatment?

lovemycbf · 27/06/2023 12:24

This was me until I had an ablation and it's life changing I'd recommend it to anyone in that position

They've said it's normal until I've stopped bleeding for a whole year.
Seems weird and unsettling to me as I've always been regular.

If you are in peri-menopause your GP should advise about HRT.

I'm not allowed hrt due to blood clotting gene. Feel there's no hope at the moment

Can they fit the Mirena at least to try and stop the heavy bleeding?

Ikeepontrying · 27/06/2023 15:22

They've not said anything about that just to try natural supplements 🤷🏻‍♀️

For a long time I couldn't have the Pill as I used to get migraines. They let me have the Mirena coil though and it really did reduce the bleeding.

If natural supplements don't work, I'd go back.

This was me five years ago, OP, two horribly heavy bleeds a month, some months more days bleeding then not. I had the mirena and it worked, took many months to settle down, very sore breasts for a number of weeks but I wasn’t bleeding any more than I was before insertion so I stuck with it. I had two and a bit years with minimal bleeding, reduced PMT, no breast tenderness, and some months there was no blood at all. Last year the periods came back in force, gynae has now suggested an ablation. Glad to hear @lovemycbf had a good experience. The only lifestyle change that seemed to work slightly to reduce the severity of bleeding was knocking booze on the head. Mirena was a good shout, I know some people don’t like it, but it’s worth it if it works.

I'm exactly the same I have blood clotting antibodies and can't have HRT but as I said above an ablation has solved all my heavy bleeding it's called nova sure .it's worth looking into

A referral for an ultrasound to spot anything like polyps, fibroids or thickening of your womb lining might be a next step. I was referred when I had irregular bleeding even though my periods hadn't stopped.

lovemycbf · 27/06/2023 19:50

@dartsofcupid you really won't regret an ablation I put it off and carried on for 4 years until I couldn't take the heavy bleeding anymore and my ferritin level was 5

dartsofcupid · 27/06/2023 20:23

@lovemycbf five, fucking hell, you must have been struggling, cognitive function starts to go and all that, doesn’t it?

I think I’m going to go for it, what makes me think twice is that I’ll be paying for it myself and they said the womb lining might grow back, I dunno if that’s common tho. Crossing my fingers if I get a few years out of it I’ll be 46/47 and probably it’ll be winding up by then.

lovemycbf · 27/06/2023 20:52

@dartsofcupid yes I was quite unwell but even at ferritin level 5 my GP wouldn't refer me for an iron infusion ,the gynaecologist went mad and said I should have had a blood transfusion at anything less than 7
Regarding womb lining growing back it's been 4 years since I had mine I'm 47 and still have a very light almost not there bleed every month but some women never bleed again
I got mine on the nhs though
Good luck and you won't regret it I'm sure
