About to come off the pill

I've recently found out that you can't tell if you've reached menopause if you're on the pill: https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/contraception/menopause-contraceptive-pill/
I'm going to come off the pill next month. I've got a talk with my doctor in a few weeks, but was just wondering what your experiences of coming off the pill are. I'm 47 and have been using gedarel 20/150 for years. I've been on the pill since I was 19.

How do I know I've reached menopause if I'm on the pill?

It's hard to know for sure if you've reached menopause when you're on the pill. Find out when you can safely stop taking the combined pill and the progestogen-only pill.

Make sure your contraception is alternatively covered,
My friend had her second set of twins at 47.

Will do - we're going to switch to condoms.

Second set of twins at 47 😳😳

I'm 49 and don't use contraception as dh has had a vasectomy. Unfortunately I haven't gone through menopause so still get periods

dementedpixie · 25/06/2023 10:53

If you are happy on the pill I would just stay on it as according to your link the pill can help control menopause symptoms. I'd then stop age 50 and assess then (50 is when you should stop combined contraceptives anyway)

DustyLee123 · 25/06/2023 12:37

I was still having regular periods until I had a coil at 50

Secondstart1001 · 09/03/2024 23:30

This thread is useful as I’m going back on the pill at 46 as I have regular periods and after 4 years, DP and I are sick of condoms. @3LeggedCat what was the outcome once you stopped … did you get your period or no?

3LeggedCat · 10/03/2024 14:52

@Secondstart1001 I stopped taking the pill early in July 2023. I got my first period at the end of November and the second one in February this year. We hate condoms too, so considering the snip. I definitely wouldn't go back on the pill again as used to often have an upset stomach. Also I've lost about half a stone.

@3LeggedCat thanks for your reply so no sign of menopause? I forgot about the putting on weight aspect of the the pill as I stopped taking at 34. I’ve always been really fertile so I will just stay on pill for a year as want to fully enjoy the freedom it will give us! This pill is for the older women and not what I’m used to but the spotting has stopped but we are yet to ❤️try it out as I’ve been away with work! Roll on Tuesday when I see him again lol I cannot wait

Rowgtfc72 · 10/03/2024 15:38

I'm on the minipill and am 52. I'm also planning on staying on it till the doc takes it away at 55 as my periods are still, annoyingly, reasonably regular.
I live in hope the extra hormones means menopause will be easy on me.

JenniferBooth · 10/03/2024 15:47

OH @Rowgtfc72 Im 51 this June and have been on the mini pill since October 2021 Three bleeds in 2022 and none last year at all. I want to come off it but have no idea whether the cessation of periods have been caused by the mini pill or the menopause Child free by choice so dont want to take any risks

Rowgtfc72 · 10/03/2024 15:59

@JenniferBooth a lady I work with has been on the pill since her 20s. She's 55 this year and dreading what will happen as she doesn't have periods.
She does have menopause symptoms though.
